Engagement: In preparation for this lesson, make sure to have all materials ready for use and have the Promethean Board turned on and the Handwriting Without Tears software program pulled up. Make sure to state the objective clearly at the beginning of the lesson. Have the students come to the carpet by the Promethean board to begin the lesson. Have the technology rules poster on the wall beside the Promethean Board. Good morning, boys and girls! Today our letter of the day is K. Can you say, K? Hold up a picture of a capitol letter K. Have students repeat after you and say, K. K makes the /K/ sound. Can you make the sound too? Have students say the letters sound together. Your ears, so that I know you are listening, your eyes, so that I know you are watching, and your attention so that I know you are ready to learn. Show students Starfall ABCs Letter K Interactive Video http://www.starfall.com/n/level-k/index/load.htm?f

Before beginning the Starfall activity, teach student the technology rules by reading through the Technology Rules Poster. Discuss examples and nonexamples of each rule. Then model using Starfall and show students what good versus bad use of the Promethean Board looks like. Allow students to come to the board one at a time and find the K on the slide and complete the corresponding letter activity. Remind them to follow the Technology Rules and be responsible with the Promethean Board. Show students items that start with the letter K. Practice saying the letter K and making the sound. Show the students an image of the letter K on the Promethean Board. Teaching: Using the Handwriting Without Tears Promethean Program model how to write

Answer the following questions: 1. Do I know how to use the technology tool(s) that will be used by my students? Yes, I know how to use the Promethean Board. I worked alongside Dr. Haralson to gain experience and training on how to use the Promethean Board. I have also had experience using the Promethean Board during previous lessons. In addition, I have used the Promethean Board to

complete all the tasks expected of my students during this lesson. This included visiting each website, using the software program, and practicing writing letters in a template. 2. What technology skills do my students already have that are needed for this lesson? The students will have had experience using the Promethean board prior to this lesson. They will be able to: o Use the Promethean Pen to write, click, and scroll. o Navigate simple websites/pages with the teachers supervision. o Be aware of basic technology rules. o Use the Handwriting Without Tears Software Program to write letters, watch tutorials, and erase writing.

3. What technology skills will they need to learn to complete this lesson successfully? To complete this lesson successfully, each student will need to: o Learn how to use take care of technology tools (ex. Putting them away where they belong, never leaving the Promethean Pen on the floor, not drawing on the Promethean with markers, etc. o Become knowledgeable of the technology rules. o Be able to abide by all technology rules. o Practice safe and responsible technology use. 4. What is the appropriate setting for this lesson (classroom, lab, library, home)? Is this setting available for my students to use? This lesson should take place either in a classroom with a Promethean Board or in a computer lab. It would be helpful for students to be able to sit around the Promethean Board as they take turns and watch each other practice writing. For this reason, it may work best to have students seated on a carpet in front of the board. This setting is available in my students classroom. 5. What tools and resources will I need? (List of all Web sites, specific software and hardware, and other needs.)

*The teacher may extend the lesson by adding additional practice/extension using the Promethean Board. Students may work in groups to write all the missing Ks into the Letter K Poem attached below after the teacher has read it aloud. Students can be split into small groups and can take turns using the Promethean Board and helping each other write all the missing Ks. Each student can take turn writing a letter K on the board. This activity not only provides added practice writing the letter K, but provides an

opportunity for students to collaborate and use the Promethean board in a safe and content enhancing manner. 6. How much time do I need to allow for this lesson? This lesson will take approximately twenty minutes to teach. 7. Who can help me with the planning and/or implementation of this lesson? The schools technology team leader or technology teacher would be a great person to receive help from in regards to planning or implementing this lesson. They may be able to offer tips and suggestions for purposefully integrating technology in ways that not only enhances learning but develops essential technology skills. 8. How will I assess the students learning? Student learning will be assessed using the Letter K assessment and the Technology Rubric. Although the main purpose of the lesson is to teach students to identify and write the letter K, the integration of technology also helps students learn to use it effectively and purposefully. The rubric allows the teacher to assess how well the students engaged in meaningful and appropriate technology use and conduct. Students use of technology should adhere to the Technology Rules in order to meet the standard. In addition, students should receive at least a 6 out of 8 points on the technology rubric in order to meet the objective.

Technology Rules:

T- Take good care of your device. Do not touch the screen or leave it where it may get damaged or broken. E- Eating while using technology is not allowed. C- Check to make sure you have the teachers permission to begin using technology. H- Help set a good example for others while using technology in an appropriate way. N- Never use technology to post something you might regret. O- Only go to the websites that the teacher asks you to. L- Leave your device the same way you found it! O- Opportunity is out there. Look for ways to use technology to help you learn more. G Get help when problems occur with your device. Y Your learning is must important!
