October 10, 2013 Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: Small beakers, eye droppers,

teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulphur powder, aluminium foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, and sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems Problems: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminium powder A. We weighed the teaspoon without the powder, then with the powder. Then after collecting the data, we did the calculations.

B. Mass of teaspoon: 1.972 g Mass of teaspoon + Al powder: 4.369 g Mass of Al powder: 2.397 g C.

Concluding Statement: there are 5.348 x 10^22 atoms in a level teaspoon of Al powder.

2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. We first found the mass of the teaspoon and then with iron powder. After collecting the data, we did the calculations.

B. Mass of teaspoon: 1.97 g Mass of teaspoon + Fe powder: 11.8 g Mass of Fe powder: 9.83 g C.

Concluding Statement: you need 5.68 teaspoons of iron to find 1.00 mol of iron powder. 3. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00 cm^2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. We found the area of the zinc first, and then we found the mass. After doing so, we did the calculations.

B. Mass of Zn: 1.02 g Length of Zn: 2.97 cm Width of Zn: 2.97 cm C.

Concluding Statement: there are 2.13 x 10^21 atoms in a piece of zinc metal that is 2.00 cm^2. 5. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper. A. First we found the length of the wire, and then the mass. After doing so, we did the calculations.

B. Length of Cu wire: 10.08 cm Mass of Cu wire: 1.88 g C.

Concluding Statement: 6.81 m of copper wire is needed to provide 2.00 moles of copper.
