Session A: Using Formative Assessments to Promote Language Learning Presenters: Dr. MaryAnn Christison and Dr. Adrian Palmer, University of Utah, USA Abstract:
When most English learners think of assessment, they think of how they have been evaluated on their own learning efforts through the use of quizzes, exams, assignments, and final projects. These types of assessments are known as summative assessments, and they are quite different from formative assessments. The focus of formative assessment is on monitoring student learning. It assists learners in identifying their strengths and weaknesses and in targeting areas that need improvement. Formative assessments also help language teachers recognize how to address learning problems, when to move forward with new concepts and ideas, and when to recycle information. When formative assessment is incorporated into classroom instruction, it provides the information necessary to adjust instruction during the learning process. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to different types of formative assessments that can be used for collecting evidence of student learning for both oracy and literacy development. Workshop participants will experience the formative assessments in the process of learning the new information in this workshop as the presenters model the assessments with them that they want participants to use with their own learners.

Session B: Project Based Learning Presenter: Dr. Ilene Winokur AlZaid, Specialized Solutions Abstract:
Real learning is achieved in a variety of ways. By answering an authentic and meaningful challenge, presented by the teacher or generated by students, learners experience real-world problem solving and work in cooperative groups. The challenge may come in various configurations, such as a question, problem or task and is tackled by students working collaboratively with their teachers assistance. Many 21st century learning skills, such as teamwork, negotiation and critical thinking, are enhanced in this PBL workshop. Goals: During this workshop, participants will 1. learn how to prepare, design, manage and assess a project 2. discover the 8 essentials of successful PBL 3. gain an understanding of the complete PBL process 4. practice designing their own project

Session C: Moving to a Differentiated Classroom and Workplace Setting Presenter: Mrs. Susan Hamade van der Merwe, Australian College of Kuwait Abstract:
Differentiation is a key topic many educators and even trainers are discussing nowadays. We as professionals want to get the best out of our students and our employees. It has become quite apparent that the one size fits all category does not apply nowadays with our diverse classrooms and high demand workplaces. When it comes to implementing a differentiated program, only parts of differentiation have been observed in classrooms or institutions. This workshop aims to engage the audience in a discussion about what differentiation is, tackle misconceptions, and involve all in the process of transforming their lessons/sessions to differentiated ones. Participants will be involved in hands on activities including task assignment, material development and modification, planning with learning styles in mind, and also engaging those with learning difficulties. At the end of this session, attendees will have acquired differentiation strategies and will be ready to implement it and create a pathway where all can reach that goal in their own way.

Session D: Lets talk 21st Century Education: What does it really look like? Presenter: Dr. Jennifer Beckwith, American University School of Kuwait Abstract:
This workshop explores the question of What is 21st century education? We know 21stcentury education is bold. It breaks the mold. It is flexible, creative, challenging, and complex. However many schools struggle to implement the critical attributes and multiple literacies that 21st century education demands. Participants will review what 21st century skills are, look at curriculum options, discuss facility designs that support 21st century learning, plus explore virtual, blended and flipped classroom options. Join us for invigorating conversations and formative ideas on making 21st Century Education a reality for students.
