    The suffragettes were a women's movement in the early 1900s that fought for women's right to vote in the UK. They formed in 1903 when Christabel Pankhurst and her mother Emmeline Pankhurst established the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) because men refused to extend the right to vote to women. As their campaign became more militant, suffragettes burned and bombed buildings to draw attention to their cause. The Cat and Mouse Act allowed imprisoned suffragettes to be released from prison when they were weak and re-arrested when recovered. In 1918, some women over 30 who met minimum property qualifications gained the right to vote.
