SEQUENCE OF TEACHING GRAMMAR STEPS FOUR FIVE SIX

STEP NO. 4
If you remember step no. 3 (and who among you

does?), we defined the word syntax as the order we put words together in order to communicate meaning.
In English the normal syntax is subject first, verb next.
John ran = Subject (John) + verb (ran)

So step no. 4 is
When we place a noun in front of a verb, the noun becomes the subject of the verb.

Watch!
The car
___________

runs
___________

subject

verb

You have determined that runs is a verb because it can be conjugated. Car is a noun because you can place the article the in front of it. Thus the noun CAR becomes the subject of the verb RUNS.

All you can say is

OMG!

STEP NO. 5
A SUBJECT AND A VERB CREATE AN IDEA. THE PURPOSE OF WRITING IS TO COMMUNICATE IDEAS. IN OTHER WORDS, TO CREATE AN IDEA, YOU MUST HAVE A SUBJECT AND A VERB.

WATCH
THE CAR IS QUICK CAR = THE SUBJECT IS = THE VERB WE HAVE AN IDEA! THE CAR CAR = THE SUBJECT THERE IS NO VERB THUS, LIKE MANY, YOU HAVE NO IDEA!

STEP NO. 6
A CLAUSE CREATES AN IDEA BECAUSE IT IS A GROUP OF WORDS THAT CONSISTS OF A SUBJECT AND A VERB.

WATCH
THE CAR RUNS

THE CAR = THE SUBJECT RUNS = THE VERB THUS, WE HAVE AN IDEA BECAUSE IT CONTAINS A SUBJECT AND A VERB. BECAUSE IT CONTAINS AN IDEA (SUBJECT AND VERB) IT IS A CLAUSE!

FROM NOW ON
WE WILL CALL A COMPLETE SENTENCE A CLAUSE!

Remember this formula!

SUBJECT + VERB = AN IDEA = A CLAUSE
CLAUSE

IDEA SUBJECT VERB

FINALLY
