BIOSTATICTICS Assignment 4

SA/Manas/Adithya

Topics: Confidence interval, testing, transforms of distributions, prob. Evaluation 1. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the severe end of the spectrum of disabilities caused by maternal alcohol use during pregnancy. A sample of 31 individuals who suffer from this syndrome is _ selected and their heights measured yielding a sample average of x31 = 147.4 cms; assume that the heights are normally distributed with unknown mean and known standard deviation = 6. (a) What is the point estimate of the mean height ? (b) Based on the sample obtain, obtain: (i) 2-sided 95% confidence interval (ii) 2-sided 99% confidence interval (iii) 1-sided upper bound for 95% and 99% confidence intervals (iv) Compare the figures under (iii) with those from (i) and (ii), and comment in no more than 3 lines (2 sentences)

2. For the data given under 1 above, conduct the following hypotheses tests, with Type I error = 0.05: (i) H0: = 140 H1 : =/= 140 (ii) H0: = 140 H1 : > 140 (iii) H0: = 140 H1 : = 150 In this case, find the value 3. If {Xi} are independent identically integer-valued random variables, with z-transform G(z), n what is the z-transform of the sum Xi 1 Hint: Expected value of the sum/product of random variables = sum/product of the rv s Using the above relationship, find the z-transform of sum of `n Bernouli(0.3) rvs, and from this z-transform of the sum, obtain expectation and variance of the sum. What is the z-transform of a Poisson() rv. From this, find the mean and standard deviation of a Poisson rv. 4. A circle of radius 1 is divided into 3 parts as follows with outermost circle of radius `1, an inner circle of radius and another inner circle of radius . (a) Draw the figure with the circle and mark the 3-areas defined by the 3 circles; (b) An arrow is thrown at random and it falls into the respective areas uniformly (i.e., proportional to the total area). Find the probabilities of falling into the respective areas; (c) If you earn 100 units if it falls in the innermost area, 50 in the second, and 20 in the outermost area, find the expected value earned and the standard deviation.
