Notes on this Edition


This edition of Hummels Introduction, Theme, and Variations was made at the request of Eugene
Corporon for performance in April 2007 by members of the University of North Texas Wind Symphony and
Kristin Polk, solo oboe. In transcribing, I used an orchestral score (published by Musica Rara, #1216) and
compared it to the wind version, as performed by the Consortium Classicum on The Wind Serenades of
Johann Hummel (MDG records, Germany). A second recording, made by oboist Alex Klein and the Czech
National Symphony Orchestra (Cedille Records, USA) provided an additional perspective on interpretation.
The resulting instrumentation is a modern version of the Harmoniemusik ensemble characteristic of
Hummels era, with the double bass added to extend its range. The double bass frequently found its way
into Harmoniemusik ensembles as a doubling of the second bassoon part, a practice which this arrangement
continues. As for arranging, the present edition makes full use of all eleven players in the accompaniment,
where modern chord spacings and Classical voice leading combine in a new rendering of Hummels
colorful work.

Performance Notes

The score is transposed.

Empty measures in the score represent the equivalent of a whole-rest in the current meter.

Accidentals function in a traditional manner, carrying through each bar unless cancelled.

The ensemble should play all grace notes before the beat, but the soloist may choose to play them on

the beat.

Where repeats are written, the soloist is free to ornament the music in late Baroque and early

Classical idioms.

Program Notes
Hummels Introduction, Theme, and Variations place high demands on the soloist in rendering them
in a pleasing and effective way, and their formal pattern is also very interesting. Elements of strict variation
technique combine with those of fantasy. The inclusion of the tempo di valse variation, along with two more
variations which follow it, is especially attractive. The work is a true enrichment of the solo literature for
oboe.

About the Composer


Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born in Bratislava on November 14, 1778. He grew up in Vienna,
where, as a nine year-old boy, he received lessons for two years from Mozart. In his early years, he went on
concert tours to Denmark and England, after which he became a pupil of Salieri and Albrechtsberger. He
was also taught the organ by Haydn, who post as Kappelmeister at Esterhzy he took over in the years
1804-1811. He became Hofkappelmeister at Stuttgart in 1816, and proceeded as such to Weimar in 1819,
where he remained until his death on October 17, 1837. Numerous concert tours led him to France,
Belgium, Holland, Poland, and Russia.
Hummel was greatly esteemed by his contemporaries as a brilliant pianist and a highly imaginative
improviser. Robert Schumann named him alongside Ignaz Moscheles and Chopin as a versatile and
cultured composer. Chopin himself always held Hummel in high esteem, and Carl Maria von Weber found
in Hummels piano playing a happy combination of tenderness and elegance. These characteristics may
be applied to all of Hummels compositions, which represent a transition from the decadence of the Classics
to the virtuosity of the Romantics. His works, numbering approximately 150, were widely known during his
lifetime. In addition, he also compiled an extensive piano method, which included more than 2000 musical
examples. Finally, in 1825, Hummel made a fragmentary sketch of a Mozart biography.

About the Transcriber


Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Mark Scott began studying composition and trombone
performance at the University of North Texas in August 2003. In Spring 2008, Mark will graduate with two
bachelors degrees from UNT, where he has studied with Cindy McTee and Jan Kagarice. While still an
undergraduate, Mark has become a student of Anshel Brusilow, conducting the University Symphony and
Repertoire Orchestras on a regular basis. Mark was a winner in the 2006 UNT Concerto Competition as a
composer, and a finalist as a trombonist in 2007. He has performed with the UNT Wind Symphony,
Symphonic Band, Five oclock Lab Band, Basketball Band, and plays professionally in the Lone Star Wind
Orchestra. As a composer, Mark has heard his works performed by the Richardson Symphony, UNT
Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and by students of euphonium virtuoso Brian
Bowman in the U.S. and abroad. Apart from composing, performing, and conducting, Mark enjoys playing
