ILD Meeting Summary Monday, November 4, 2013 3-4:20 In Attendance: Michelle Davis, Kristin Dorey, Brent Schive, Pat

Barrett, Sheryl Hatton, Tammie Stockli, Chelsea Campbell, Sonia Grewal, Graeme Grant, Navshina Savory, Laurie Jean, Mike Stickley, Stefan Stipp 1. Windows Surfaces: They have arrived and are ready for classroom use. No SESM classes expressed interest in using the Surfaces for the rest of this semester for inquiry purposes so they will be used by Global Perspectives 12, Co-op 11 and Inquiry Studies 8 for now. If other teachers are interested in using these computers in P 1 and or P2 to support attempts at inquiry based learning, please see Stefan. 2. Book Club We agreed to send out the following invitation to staff: A group of GP teachers is interested in further exploring inquiry based teaching (the topic of Neil Stephensons workshop in September). We plan to meet on the third Tuesday of each month starting November 19th in room C-111 at 3:00 PM. Wed like to extend an invitation to anyone else on staff to join us. Our initial project is to read and discuss the book Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action bit by bit. We plan to have read the first chapter for the meeting on the 19th. Beyond that our groups plans will be developed by its members. Feel free to come to the first meeting to kick the tires. Please e-mail Stefan Stipp if you plan to attend the first meeting and Ill get you a copy of the reading. Youll get a book if you decide to join us.

3. Who will teach IS 8 next year? How can we minimize the impact on other Grade 9 classes? We agreed that as discussed before, current SESM teachers should be asked first if they are interested in teaching IS next year. If there is no interest we would ask the new SESM teachers (Tammie and Sheryls replacements). We had a thoughtful and wide ranging discussion about the challenges of teaching diverse and very needy grade 8 and 9 classes. We re-affirmed that we do not want IS to negatively affect our colleagues in grades 8 and 9. We also agreed that the conversation about how to best improve the composition of the grade 8 and 9 academic classes need to include all teachers of those classes. We plan to invite those teachers to a meeting on Monday, December 2nd. 4. PLCs Are we ready to go there? Stefan shared the timetable just newly introduced at North Surrey that has a few minutes added to each block on Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri so that Wednesday is a late start day (around 9:30). One Wednesday per month is used for staff meetings and one is used for department meetings. The other two could be used for optional PLCs. We talked briefly about the merits and issues with such a schedule and agreed to discuss this further in January with the possibility of bringing a proposal to staff committee.
