Design Technology: Stop Motion Animation Investigation

Design Objective: Create a claymation stop motion animation. Design Context: I will create a stop motion animation using only clay figures or structures. A series of pictures with different positions of the clay figures create a moving video once edited together. After taking a picture, the clay object must be moved into its next position. The more frames (pictures) I take, the smoother the movements will be in the video. Method: 1. Make a Storyboard for all scenes or movements of the subjects. 2. Design the subjects using mixed clay first and then with the proper colors. 3. Start taking photos while slowly changing the movements of the figures. 4. Put together your photos in an editing software and add music corresponding to your theme. Research Magic Water: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSzCLf8tjP4 This animation was exztremley well made. The creator took many photos for each movement almost as many as in real film (24fps). The movements were very fluid and well made. The story was interesting and unique. The only negative things about this animation was that the creator could have been a little more creative with the backgrounds and have better lighting for some of his shots. Drug Bust Doody

A very professional animation. The creator is obviously professional. The shots are very

smoothand unique, and it must have taken a long time to complete this animation. It is a bit too violent and could be made to a cleaner version.

This very creative animation was different from the others because it used humans instead of clay figures. This animation shows that there is a lot of work behind a small stopmotion video like this.
Things to Consider: 1. Keep it simple 2. Make a storyboard 3. Be patient

Design Features 1. My first option is P for Pizza. It will start with a ball of dough that is rolled out, then tomato sauce is added and finally small pieces of salami. Finally the pizza is cut and piece after piece disappears. Finally the word Pizza is shown made out of pizza letters. 2. The second option would be S for Snake. The S would strech out and transform into a snake and over time more and more snakelike features would be added to the S. 3. My last option is B for Burger. The letter B would come up in brown. The B is then filled to a circle to make a patty. The angle changes and all other ingredients including salad, tomato and a bun get put together to make a Hamburger. Design Specifications 1. Make at least 1530 frames per seconds 2. Make small movements for each frame 3. Keep a constant exposure on camera settings 4. Use a green or blue background Reason To ensure that the animation is smooth like a video. To ensure that the animation is smooth like a video. Script Outline 1. The letters p,f,o,r,p,i,z,z,a come in and make the word P for Pizza. 2. The dough ball comes in and rolls out to make a pizza dough base. 3. It is followed by other tomato sauce, cheese and salami. 4. The Pizza is baked, and then sliced in to eight pieces. 5. Piece after piece disappears 6. Finally the letters PIZZA come back in a food font. Storyboarding: Intro

Claymation Reflection Task: For our first Design Technology Unit, we made a claymation animation Result: I made a claymation animation about the letter P and that it stands for Pizza. I took 102 photos. The final edited product should be about 10-15 seconds. At the start a P pops into frame, and is then followed by the word for. Then a dough ball is rolled out and made into a pizza base. It is followed by tomoato sauce and cheese to complete the Pizza. It is then cut and piece after ppiece it disappears. At the end the word Pizza appears in pizza letters.

1. What is the educational message?

Justinus Steinhorst

9/3/2013

The educational message for this video is that a word that begins with the letter C is Cheese. The educational message was that sharing is a word that starts with s. The educational message was to teach kids that P stands for Pasta. 2. Is its message/story clear? Do you understand it? Yes, I was able to clearly understand the story and message. The method is a little bit difficult to understand, but if you watch closely and listen to the music, you will grasp it quickly. The message is very clear. 3. What are the animation techniques like? How could they be improved? Very smooth, but sometimes the lighting was different. Could improve by making more shots and keeping the lighting constant. Very smooth animating, falling of objects was very smooth, decent job on the movement of the characters. The animator was very creative with his animation and they were mostly smooth. 4. What are the editing techniques like? How could they be improved? The editing was very solid, the editor could have added some more creative fonts for the intro and outro. There was no real editing except for putting together the images and adding music. The editing was very good, good work especially on the credits. 5. What are the titles, text and credits like? The titles were solid but could have been written in a different font. Unfortunatley there are no titles, texts or credits. The text is made out of the items he is describing. Very unique idea! 6. What do you like about it? Very educational, and the story was clear and creative. Very good and creative idea, funny and suitable for EC kids. I enjoyed watching this video because it was unique, eye catching and well made. 7. Is it educational?

Justinus Steinhorst

9/3/2013

Yes. Very educational and has a deeper meaning about sharing and why it is important. Yes. 8. Is it fun?, Colourful? Would EC students like it?I think EC Students would enjoy watching this video and it would not be confusing to them. EC Students will enjoy this video, but it might be a little bit confusing. It is fun, not that colourful, but EC students will still be able to understand the message and story. 9. Can it be improved The only flaw that I found in this video is that it should be a bit longer. The person could add some titles or credits, and could make the entire video longer since it is quite short. Some of his texts could have been arranged a little bit neater, other than that very well made.

Personal Evaluation: 1. What is the educational message?

The educational message in my animation was to teach younger students that Pizza is a word that starts with P. 2. Is its message/story clear? Do you understand it? Yes, the message of my animation is quite clear to understand. 3. What are the animation techniques like? How could they be improved? My animations were very smooth, the video turned out to be about 10fps. I moved my objects, for very short distances, to ensure smooth shots. 4. What are the editing techniques like? How could they be improved?

I added some music into my animation, and credits at the end. I could improve by adding another background by keying out the green background. 5. What are the titles, text and credits like? Most of my text was made out of clay letters or pizza slices. In my opinion my texts were ver creative. 6. What do you like about it? My video was interesting to watch and amusing. At the same time it contained an educational message for younger students. 7. Is it educational? In my opinion my video is educational. It helps teach younger students to learn the alphabet by incorporating familiar items. 8. Is it fun?, Colourful? Would EC students like it? My animation includes colorful clay objects and is easy to understand. 9. Does the music match the animation? My song is called the Pizza Nursery Rhyme it matches the content of my video. 10. Can it be improved?

My animation couold be improved by making it longer (Making the story longer, adding more images). It could also be improved by changing the background and perhaps keying it to something different.

To make a good animation, one must follow three basic rules: Dont make it too complicated, take as many pictures as you can for each motion and be creative. If you make the movements of your figurines to complicated, the movements will become messy and not smooth. Take as many shots as you can to make your animations as close to real film as possible. Be creative and use your imagination to come up with a story that is fun and easy to understand for elementary schoolers. In future, to make this assignment more enjoyable, we could spend more time preparing our animation. We could make more backgrounds and items for our animations in order to make them longer.
