Sarang Mani 9D 1. Design Context Design Objective: Create a stop motion animation involving clay and/or paper. Concept Details: Claymation or clay animation is one of the many forms of stop motion animation, which involves making movies/videos by merging a number of individual frames. The process involves using deformable substances such as play-doh or clay to make figurines or objects. The figurines must be moved according to the context of the story. Each movement must be photographed so as to combine the different images into a video that has a speed of 30 frames per second.

Suggestions: Keep it simple. Look for inspiration. Think realistically. Make a storyboard and follow it. Be patient.

An Alien Claymation By leehardcastle

The animation was very detailed and well-framed but certainly not appropriate for our expected audience. The flowing motions of blood and the fight scenes would have required a lot of patience and incorporate a lot of frames over a short period of time. It gives an effect of continuity to the claymation. The story is extremely creative but too bloody and gory. The Infection Claymation: By alexsnowskate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql4Kkb-89D0

This animation, though not as complicated, was better suited for our audience. It was a more realistic prospect as it was slower and shorter. The figures are simple and seem easy to create. The movement was well timed and the effects such as the light and music really improved the effect. The storyline is informative and creative, great for our audience. figurines. It follows the scene of a beach and a squid known as Sammy. The scene where the octopi/squids play with the ball has a nice flow to it. The storyline is cute and creative. **********

Design Brief
P is for Pasta My first option is P is for Pasta. The video will start with a huge P, which breaks up to form different types of pasta, which morph to form the words is for pasta. I will need yellow/white clay, and a large amount of the same. Otherwise, I could use actual pasta. If I use clay, I will need to be patient and find a way to twist the clay into different shapes, especially ones like macaroni and penne. This problem can be overcome by using actual pasta.

Design Specifications (if using clay): 1. The clay must be a mixture of yellow and white (or light yellow) to represent the true colour of pasta. 2. All pieces of pasta must be at least 2 cm long and 1 cm wide. 3. There must be enough clay to make about 25 such pieces. 4. The clay should be smooth to show the texture of pasta. 5. Make holes in the clay to make it look like pasta.

Design Specifications (if using actual pasta): 1. There must be enough pasta to form all the letters, i.e., about 25 pieces. 2. There must be different types of pasta, as it will be difficult to form the letters using just one type. Design Specifications (general): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. The claymation should be such that EC students can identify the different letters. The claymation should be appropriate for EC children. The story should be simple, for EC students to understand. The video should be educational. The video should be made according to a planned storyboard. There must be enough pictures to make the video smoother. The video should be at least a minute long. There should be a background. There should be background music.

What is the educational message? The animation teaches the alphabet in a fun way. Is its message/story clear? Do you understand it? The message is not very complicated and easy to understand. What are the animation techniques like? How could they be improve The animation technique is not very complicated either. I believe that using real pasta instead of clay figures, which was originally suggested by Mr. Payne, was a very creative idea. What are they editing techniques like? How could they be improved? The editing techniques were not very good. I did not have enough time to edit the video and it was a rather hasty process. The video needs to be slower, especially with the title, which can barely be noticed. What are the titles, text and credits like? The title and credits were not edited well. The title is barely visible before it leaves the screen. No text was involved, and the pasta itself was used to form the letters and words. What do you like about it? The most noticeable thing about my animation is the way it uses the object in question (pasta) instead of clay figures of the same. Most of the other animations made used clay figures. I also like the black and white background, which adds a 3D effect to the video. The music is pacy and accompanies the movement of the pasta well. Is it educational? The message is very clear and very simple. The video aims to teach the alphabet in a fun way. Is it fun?, Colourful? Would EC students like it? Yes.

Not very colourful, but the black and white background creates a 3D effect which makes it look more realistic. Yes. How can it be improved? Made longer? The video is much too short and requires better editing. The credits and title rush past the screen. The video show have more frames and a more complex plot or a story.

********** Design Evaluation: 10. The claymation should be such that EC students can identify the different letters. The letters were clear, but there was some difficult in recognising the P is@, as it seemed more like Pis. 11. The claymation should be appropriate for EC children. The claymation carried a simple educational message: teaching the alphabet in a simple way. It was not very colourful but had a 3D effect with the pasta over a black and white background. 12. The story should be simple, for EC students to understand. 4. The video should be educational. The claymation carried a simple educational message: teaching the alphabet in a simple way. 13. The video should be made according to a planned storyboard. I planned and made a storyboard, and the stop motion followed the plan. The storyboard itself was not very aesthetically pleasant, but the stop motion finished fine. 14. There must be enough pictures to make the video smoother.

Sarang Mani 9D

I had enough pictures to show clearly the movement of the pasta and the formation of the letters. However, the credits and title were short on frames. 15. There must be enough pasta to form all the letters, i.e., about 25 pieces. There must be different types of pasta, as it will be difficult to form the letters using just one type. I had enough pasta of 2 different types and was successful in forming all the needed letters. A good, interesting animation should: Be planned using a storyboard, and by deriving ideas and inspiration from different sources. Have a set message or story. Should have well made clay figures or objects that can be identified. The text, if any, should be clear and readable. Have enough frames to show smooth and clear movement of figures. Be at least 45 seconds so as to capture the audience, and convey the full story or message. Be at most 1 minute long, so as to convey the message without being boring. Have background music that suits or is in some way related to the set message. Have a background which helps in narrating the set while possibly adding visual effects. Use appropriate animation and visual/sound effects so that it is interesting but not too elaborate. Be edited wisely, so that it conveys the message in an appropriate amount of time. Have a title and credits that are readable and do not speed across the screen. The stop motion could possibly use slides for words to narrate the story. Project Reflection:

Sarang Mani 9D

This project, which stretched over the course of about 2 months was an enjoyable and educational oen. We made similar. claymations last year as part of an art project. This time, however, we focused more on the technical aspects and appropriate editing of the stop motion. The stop motion was supposed to carry an educational message using the alphabet, which was an interesting challenge. The filming process was tense, trying to get the best possible number of slides in a short period of time. Searching for appropriate music and a colourful/effective background was interesting. I did not have a lot of time to do the final editing of my stop motion, and I was not very pleased with the final result, as I know I could have done much better. Future Projects: Doing another such project, and being able to create a fully edited, finished video would be great. In doing such a future project, I would like to have more filming time as we could not all film in time due to a shortage of cameras. In doing such a project in the future, I would like to have maybe a single lesson more to do with editing, so that I can add more interesting effects. In doing such a project in the future, i would like to have a broader topic as teaching the alphabet is, in my opinion, very limited.
