Dear Parent(s): Re: Home Reading Book Talk/Response Program As we discussed in September, one of the best things ou can do for our child to help in his!her learning is to offer support and guidance to our child in a dail reading" It is important that our child be in#ol#ed in reflection and celebration of what is being read to increase comprehension and interest in reading" So we are asking for our help in supporting our child with: scheduling dail at$home reading, and then preparing a book talk! reading response to present to the class about that reading" %he & books chosen for book talks one must be a chapter book and one a non $fiction books and !or picture books at our child's reading le#el" (e will be teaching students a )fi#e finger rule* to assist in selecting books at their reading le#el" Students can choose to prepare a book talk from chapter books read during reading time at school, from librar books or other books read at home" %here will be a book talk sign$up sheet in the classroom where students will be asked to sign$up for a date to present their book talk" (e will begin presenting book talks in +arch" Presenting to peers builds confidence and articulation as well as deepens comprehension of the sub,ect" Information included in this booklet: brief student instructions and the assessment criteria for book talks, the )fi#e finger rule* to help in selecting books at student's reading le#el, a presentation preparation help sheet students can use to help them prepare and organi-e a book talk, reflection idea starters, and some reading response acti#it ideas that students ma wish to do and then use to enhance their presentation" %hank ou for our support as we work together to help our child e.perience, both success and en,o ment in their reading ad#entures this ear"
