Title: Poetry Grade Level: 8th Grade Subject: Reading Author: Briana Chapman Concept: 4MAT System Overview

Objective: Students will listen and create their own poem based off of The Secretary Chant, by Marge Piercy. Required Resources: The Secretary Chant, paper for students to write their poem, various formats of poems to read to the class.

Quadrant 1, Right mode Objective: Students will be asked to write down their own definition of poetry on a piece of paper. Activity: Have students write down their own definition of what they think poetry is. Ask students to make their definition between 3-5 sentences long. Evaluation: What to see that students are writing down a substantive definition that is pertinent to poetry. Quadrant 1, Left mode Objective: Students will discuss the mean of poetry and share their own ideas and definitions. Activity: Ask the class what they thought poetry meant to them. Have students share some of their written examples. Discuss the various definitions. Then read the proper Websters dictionary meaning of poetry: a : metrical writing : verse b : the productions of a poet : poems : writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm a : something likened to poetry especially in beauty of expression

Evaluation: Participation in discussion.

Quadrant 2, Right mode Objective: Students will understand and listen to various forms of poetry. Activity: Read various poems from Emily Dickens Robert Frost, so that students can get a broad idea of how different poems can be. Discuss the different parts of poetry and its various forms. Evaluation: Student participation in the poetry discussion. Quadrant 2, Left mode Objective: Students will write in poem verse about a current event happen in the world. Activity: Go through the various formatting of poetry and ask students to pick a current event in the news to write a poem about. The format can be any that they choose as long as it pertains to the current event. Show an example of one so that class can see what is expected of them. Evaluation: Students should be writing on a current even in poetry form. Quadrant 3, Left mode Objective: Students will share their current even poem to the class. Activity: Have students share their current event poems to the class. Evaluation: Student participation in presenting poem to the class and poem content. Quadrant 3, Right mode Objective: Students will discuss the various current even poems that were shared in class. Activity: Discuss the different poems that were written about current events. If the same current event was selected, where any two alike? Was the news still given through the poem even though it wasnt written in article or journal form? Evaluation: Class participation in discussion. Quadrant 4, Left mode

Objective: Students will listen and discuss the poem, The Secretary Chant by Marge Piecry. Students will write their own version called The Student Chant. Activity: Handout and read aloud The Secretary Chant to the class. Discuss with the class about the analogies that were made in the poem. What where they? What made the poem so entertaining? Ask students to write their own version of the poem called The Student Chant. Evaluation: Class participation in discussion and writing the poem.

Quadrant 4, Right mode Objective: Students will share their Student Chant. Activity: Students will present their poem to the whole class. Evaluation: Student presentation on poem and poem content.
