Design Exercise # 1
(10% of total course work = 75% Exercise #1 + 25% Discussion #1)

Solutions of the questions in this assignment have to be submitted by the end of week 6. These solutions count 75% of assignment 1 grade. The rest 25% will be assessed in Discussion #1 that will be held in week 7 tutorial .
Q1: Four points A, B, C and D are equally spaced at distances of four meters. For each of the profiles presented in Table Q1 check serviceability limits. Comment on the results. Table Q1 Profile no. 1 2 3 [Mark 10%] Q2: A strip footing that is 2.5 meters wide and 50 cm in thickness is resting on a sandy soil profile that is 15 m deep and resting on rigid lock layer. If the footing level is 1.5 m, the following is required: 1. The soil bearing capacity (assume necessary information) 2. Maximum distributed load to be applied if a factor of safety equals to 3.5 is used. 3. The strip footing is supporting a brick wall (fence). Check serviceability limits. Discuss how you expect your calculations to change if the rigid rock layer is replaced with another soil type. [Mark 20%] Q3: Columns A, B, C shown in figures Q3-A and Q3-B are 1.0 m x 0.5 m. Each column is subjected to 2000 kN. The footing is to be founded in a silty clay soil layer with the following engineering properties: = 18.0 kN/m3 above the groundwater table, = 19.5 kN/m3 below the ground water table, and qu = 250 kPa. The required factor of safety against bearing capacity failure is equal to 2.5. Perform complete design for reinforced concrete footings (under column A only) for each case of the two cases provided. Assume any missing information. Q4: For the driven close-ended circular pile shown in Figure Q4 , determine the ultimate end bearing resistance and the ultimate skin-friction using the -method, and SPT-Meyerhof method, assuming K= 1.6, and f = 0.67 . Determine the allowable axial compressive load capacity of the pile using a factor of safety of 3.8. After dewatering of a neighbouring site, the ground water table will be lowered by 2 meters; discuss the change in the pile capacity. [Mark 25%]
