Math Test Reflection (Chapters 3&4)

Explanation: This problem was marked wrong because I didnt follow the operations with Radicals steps. I confused the problem as a multiplication, when it was actually a subtraction. I also multiplied the radicals, which I wasnt supposed to do. I had to subtract the radicals just like variables in algebra. Next time I have to be careful in following the operations with radicals rules. 3 Incorrect:

=4+25 =29 cm Correct: =4+25 =29

cm cm

Explanation:

I got this problem wrong, because I didnt complete the Pythagoras theorem steps. Instead of leaving the answer as , I was supposed to find c. While working on the problem I didnt know how to make the into a c. Only while correcting did I realize, I had to square root the 29. Next time I have to remember to use steps such as radicals to complete the problem. Level 3-4: 6 Incorrect: 36-16= 20cm Correction: =36-16 b= Explanation: In this problem I made a mistake in not square rooting the Another reason I got this problem wrong was because of lack of organization. I didnt structure the problem systematically, so I got confused in the working out which may have had to do with my wrong answer. Next time I will have to remember to structure the problems carefully and to use square roots when necessary. Level 5-6: 7 Incorrect: (See test problem 7) c)

c)

= 24cm x2 x2 -3 -3

c) 9-1= 8

side A= 8cm

9x3-2=25 9 2=4.5

side B=25cm side C=4.5cm

Correction: a) b) =4.5 +3 +3 27

c) Side 1= 5cm Side 2= 3cm Side 3=16cm Explanation:

The mistake I made which made my whole problem wrong was I didnt simplify the problem. Instead of turning into , I confused myself and tried to convert the variable fraction, when it was simply This mistake of not simplifying completely changed my future answers for the problem. In the future I have to be careful when simplifying and make sure I follow the problem step by step. 8 a) Incorrect:

Correct:

Explanation: This problem was wrong because I forgot to use the binomial expansion rule to solve the problem. Instead I solved by multiplying the equation the powers of two. Next time I have to remember to use the binomial expansion methods. b) Incorrect:

Correction: = = +

Explanation: This problem was wrong because I didnt simplify the equation correctly. I completely mixed up the binomial method of simplifying. I had though that I had to multiply the equation by 2. In the future I will have to remember the binomial rules. d) Incorrect: =(2 = Correction: =(2 =(2 = Explanation: To solve this problem I had to use the method of Different Squares, which I did but I didnt simplify correctly. After expanding the equation, I should have added and , to simplify the equation. That mistake of not simplifying led to the mistakes made later on throughout the problem. Next time I will have to be sure to simplify and look closely at the problem Im working on. Level 7-8: 9 c) Incorrect:

yy= =

y+24

Correct:

y-

=
Explanation: While working on this problem in the test, I wasnt too sure how to use the binomial expansion with the power of 4. I worked out the problem in a very long way, and got steps wrong. The problems I had with the problem was that in some places in the equation I didnt simplify correctly. In the future I will have to know the binomial expansions with different powers and how to solve them. d) Incorrect: =( ( ) ) +2) ) =3 - +2 Correction: =( = ( ) +2) ) ) ) )

Explanation: This problem was wrong because while expanding the equation, I didnt multiply the radicals correctly. Also, I didnt simplify my problem properly for my final answer. Next time I will have to make sure to follow the equation step by step and follow it properly. e) Incorrect: ( ) ( )

Correction:

Explanation: This problem was wrong, because of the way I simplified. While doing the problem, I didnt realize that the denominators were the same. Therefore I worked out in a very long an incorrect way. To solve this equation I had to add the numerators and keep the denominator the same and simplify. Next time I will have to look closely at a problem and simplify it properly.

10 Incorrect:

Correct:

( ( (

) ) )

Explanation: This problem was wrong because I didnt follow the rule of simplifying radicals in a fraction. I didnt understand how to solve the equation because it had a fraction, which was a radical so my working out became wrong and mixed up. Next time I will have to be prepared on how to solve radical fractions and simplify step by step.
