Question 1 (40 points) Let G be the set of multiples of 3 in Z, that is G = {3n, n Z}. 1. Does G form a group with respect to multiplication? Justify your answer. 2. Prove that G forms a group with respect to addition. 3. What is the order of G? 4. Is G a cyclic group? Justify your answer. 5. Find a subgroup H of G (H should not be the identity element, and should not be the whole of H either!).

Question 2 (30 points) 1. Consider the two planar transformations H1 (z ) = iz + 3, H2 (z ) = 3z + i. Is H1 (z ) an isometry? Is H2 (z ) an isometry? Justify your answer. 2. Suppose that H is a planar isometry which has exactly one xed point given by 1 + i, and sends i to 1. Compute H , and give the geometric interpretation of H .

Question 3 (30 points) 1. Let G be a group, and consider the map f : G G, g g 1 . Is f a group homomorphism? If yes, justify your answer. If no, provide a condition on G under which f becomes a group homomorphism. 2. Consider the set R+ = {x R, x > 0}. Show that the group (R, +) is isomorphic to the group (R+ , ).
