STEP 8
AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE
COMMUNICATES AN IMPORTANT IDEA
MEMORY REFRESHER
Hey, what is an idea? Oh, you simple-headed gherkin! An idea is a clause, and a clause consists of a subject and a verb. EXAMPLE: Bill sings.
The above is a clause, which is an idea because it contains a subject (Bill) and a verb (sings).
IMPORTANT IDEA = SUBJECT + VERB = CLAUSE
STEP 9
A DEPENDENT CLAUSE
COMMUNICATES A LESS IMPORTANT IDEA
STEP 10
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND A DEPENDENT CLAUSE IS THIS
WHILE BOTH CONSIST OF A SUBJECT AND A VERB, THE DEPENDENT CLAUSE HAS ONE EXTRA WORD THAT BEGINS THE CLAUSE, WHICH IS REFERRED TO AS A SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION.
EXAMPLE
BILL SINGS = AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE, WHICH EQUALS AN IMPORTANT IDEA
STEP 11
THE FOLLOWING IS A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
SORRY
You are going to have to put that list together for yourself. If I give you the books, you will find them! Hey If I give you the books is a dependent clause, that makes it a less important idea than -you will find them, which is the important idea in that sentence.
GOOD LUCK
Hold Everything! Since I changed rooms, I dont have those books. Lucky youhere is a list of subordinating conjunctions. Hey did you notice the dependent clause (since I changed rooms) joined to an independent clause (I dont have the books). Hmmm? More about that later.
