Abstract

Introduction

Gallstone disease is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorder. Prevalent in about 10-15 % of adults Most of patients with this disease are asymptomatic Nowadays, widely accepted that the primary event in pathogenesis of cholesterol gallstones is an altered lipid metabolism. The aim of study : to compare the lipid abnormalities in female patients with gall stone over 40 years with controls

Methods
A retrospective study was done on females who underwent cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis from January 2010 December 2011. Total of 133 gall stone patients were divided into 2 groups.

<40 years ------- 72 patients with no similar

age to compare ( exclusi ) >40 years ------ 61 patient compare with 67 controls without gallstone.

Result
The comparison of total serum lipid profile in the age group >40 years showed the mean serum levels of total cholesterol and were triglycerides high but not statiscally significant (P > 0.05) between the 2 groups LDL level showed statiscally significantly difference ( P < 0.05 )

Discussion
The mean serum total cholesterol, serum triglycerides was high in gall stone patient but not significant, compared to control group. LDL cholesterol was significantly high in the case than the control group. The mean serum HDL , VLDL of the case group were lower than the control group. The etiology of cholesterol gallstones is considered to be multifactorial, with interaction of genetic and enviromental factors

The major risk factors are age, female gender and parity. The total serum lipid profile among the age group > 40 years are higher than <40 patients The risk of cholesterol gallstone disease increase with age, obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia and sedentary lifestyle.

Conclusions
The presents study demonstrates that serum LDL level was found to be statiscally significantly high in females >40 years of age There were no statistically significant differences in other parameters.
