NAVIGATION NOTES
Our fall activities began on September 19th with our recognition of two Hornet Division cadets: Sea Cadet of the Year, PO2 Alexandra Clark, and Chairmans Award recipient, PO2 Chet Kranjcevich, who both shared their experiences at the Naval Academy. Our guest speaker that evening was CMC Jason Vanderhaden of 13th Coast Guard District. The Master Chief thanked the Navy League for their continuing support of the sea services and especially the personnel. Navy League provides that friend of the sea services brief to our elected representatives on Capitol Hill and locally. Our tentative guest speaker for the October 17th dinner is RADM Dietrich Kuhlmann, Commander Submarine Group 9 at Bangor. If the current impasse continues on to October 17th in Congress, RADM Kuhlmann would have to reschedule for another time. Rest assured, the dinner meetings are informative without a guest speaker and the food is always great in the Pacific Grill buffet at the Emerald Queen in Fife. Our tentative guest speaker for November will be MOH recipient SFC Leroy Petry. We will also be recognizing both our active and reserve Marines of the Year from the Marine Combat Logistics Battalion-23 at JBLM. Finally, our Holiday Dinner party on December 19th is approaching fast. The annual holiday party is always fun and includes election of officers, holiday gift raffle and Toys for Tots collection. Please RSVP to me for October 17th! Roger Olsen, editor

SEA CADET NEWS

Hornet Division recognized several cadets in September in addition to PO2 AJ Clark and PO2 Chet Kranjcevich for their hard work: PO3 Kyle Ryan, Commanding Officer Award; LC1 Jimmie Longino, Executive Officer Award and PO2 Alexander Klein, the infamous Gibbs Award. Congratulations to all these cadets. PO2 Clark after graduation wishes to attend college to pursue a nursing degree while PO2 Kranjcevich is applying for admission to the Naval Academy. In the mean time, Hornet Division is preparing to help with the Auburn Veterans Day Breakfast and march in the Auburn Veterans Day Parade on November 9th. Several cadets have been advanced over the course of the summer: PO2 Klein, PO3 Ryan, SA Thornton, LC2 Denton and LC2 Tran. Congratulations to all. Another cadet parent has joined the officer ranks of Hornet Division, Instructor Mark Tiemeyer, as PAO. Welcome aboard Mark!

CGC MIDGETT DEPLOYS

After a six month period of upkeep and repairs at Coast Guard Base Seattle, the Midgett got underway on October 1st. This is their first deployment of the new fiscal year with maritime enforcement and drug interdiction patrol in the Eastern Pacific region which encompasses an area the size of the United States. Midgett returned early from their spring deployment due to the government sequestration. During this extended time in port, the galley was completely refitted and much painting was accomplished. Midgett is expected to return sometime in December and Tacoma Council will have an opportunity to catch up on recognitions of their Sailors of the Quarter. Until then, we wish them calm seas and a productive patrol.
