Lesson Plan: 11-10-13 Reading and Writing Chandler Leany Topic- Defining words in the context of a story and

finding metaphors and similes in a story Proof of Learning- Students will write a sentence for each word they define using it in the right context and add a simile or metaphor to four of them. Common Core Reading Standard- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. (5.RL.4) Materials/Resources Projector A short reading passage including similes and metaphors to read as a class A educational music video on similes and metaphors A story for the class to read on their own A story for Kyles reading level that includes pictures A worksheet for the class including the words to be defined A worksheet for Kyle with the words and pictures to illustrate

*Accommodations and modifications for Kyle (student with low functioning autism) will be outlined in blue. Direct Instruction- To start the lesson we will discuss the topic and goals. I will introduce the term Figurative Language, and talk about the differences between a metaphor and simile. *Well watch a short educational music video on similes and metaphors as a class. This is a simple accommodation for Kyle to have a visual aid to help him better understand. Kyle also has a special talent in music and learns very well when a song is used to reinforce learning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSBVNUO2LU Guided Instruction- Read a short passage that will be projected on the board as a class and have the students point out the similes and metaphors. There will also be one word underlined to define together and write an example sentence using that word in the right context. *Kyle will have a physical copy of the short passage so he can better follow along with his aid pointing to the words being read. (accommodation) Independent Practice- The students will all have a short story/ reading passage they will individually read. Within that story there will be 8 words underlined that they will have to define in their own words using context clues. They will have a worksheet with the 8 words listed where they will write their definitions. The students will also underline or highlight the similies and metaphors they find and identify them by using some sort of label. On a separate sheet of paper, the students will have to write a

sentence for each word they defined, using each in the right context. Two of the sentences will also have to include a simile and two will have to include a metaphor (correctly showing the difference between the two). *Kyle will receive a lower level book that better fits his reading level and also includes several pictures that illustrate the story (modification). Visual aids are very helpful for Kyle to better comprehend what the written words means. His aid will also work one on one with him to help him read and understand the plot (accommodation). His worksheet will be different in the sense that, each word will have a picture next to it illustrating the meaning. Instead of Kyle creating his own definition of each word, he will highlight the words in the text and verbally define them to his aid since he struggles with writing (accommodation). Then, he will receive two different colored highlighters in which he will use to identify the metaphors and similes. Kyle does well with color coding and using different color highlighting to organize things. His aid will assist him in doing this and ask questions to help him understand and complete this task. Closure- We will review the topic and have the some students share their definitions and agree as a class on a definition for each of the eight words assigned. Then, some students will share their sentences with their similes and metaphors to the class and we will make sure they follow the correct definition for both that we discussed at the beginning of the lesson. *I will make sure to include Kyle and have him share a simile or metaphor he found in his story. Assessment The worksheet and written sentences completed by each student Included in a future test on figurative language Kyles assessment is verbally defining his words and using color coding to identify the similes and metaphors in the story
