An Illustrated Talk on Invasive Species

What they are, where they come from, and how to manage them. By

Cynthia Boettner

Ms. Boettner is a biologist and Coordinator of the Invasive Plant Control Initiative at the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge which is part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She will briefly talk on the following topics: what are invasive plants? why should we care about them? what can be done about them, including principles of prioritization. She will address specific examples including garlic mustard, oriental bittersweet, and multiflora rose. She will discuss some of the work the Conte Refuge and other organizations are doing in the Connecticut River watershed to raise awareness about new invaders that we hope can be squelched before they become problems.
