Essay

Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen and The Death of a Soldier by Wallace Stevens. Are poems about war which exemplifies the confliction that comes with war. The Two poems are more so of similarities than of the differences. On Dulce Et Decorum Est has the poetic device of imagery, simile, symbol and the connotation in the poem. While The Death of a soldier has poetic devices of imagery and symbol in this poem. Both of the poem talks about the Un-glorification of the war. Only thing Dulce Et Decorum Est specifies more of why they war can be abhorrence more so than the good of the war. And The Death of a soldier is more accepting it. The imagery of Dulce Et Decorum Est gives more of an understanding what the narrator faced. On Line (21-23) Stanza (3) In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. The narrator talks about the dearth of a soldier he saw at war in agony pain on the verge to defeat which by so comes with death. This shows that the narrator was significantly scared of witnessing the death of that person at war lurking for help. By that it altered the way the narrator perceives war all in all. While the imagery of The Death of a Soldier Is more so direct in a way of soldiers dying but is paraphrased in a complex way to the readers. On line (1-3) Stanza (1) Life contracts and death is expected, As in a season of autumn. The soldiers falls. What I interpret from that going to war you must expect the reality that you may lose your life while doing so what you may believe is honorable but later is more drastic than you could think of. It also that through so of the falling soldier are compared to the season

of autumn which if you could deliberately think autumn is of when the leaves begin to fall. This shows that you may be of defense for your life during war but when not expected death may come to you is like saying to be aware of the allegations that may come with being a soldier. Another poetic devices that I found in Both Dulce Et Decorum Est and The Death of a Soldier is symbol. Like I stated earlier in my introductory passage. Dulce Et Decorum Est is of symbol is the justification of war all in all which maybe something more to the narrator since he have experienced the death while others may not be completely of relation to it. The Death of a Soldier is of symbol of just accepting the truth of what may come when speaking about war which may have triggered to the thought of mind due to also experiencing a death that took place during war. These shows that both of the poems are different than it may seemed when closely observed by the reader. The last poetic devices that I endured through reading both poetry that caught my attention was that Dulce Et Decorum Est used simile while The Death of a Soldier did not contend of any simile in that poem. On line (1) Stanza 1 of Dulce Et Decorum Est passage Bent double, like old beggars under sacks is talking about the soldier and comparing them to an old beggar because of these conditions that occurred during the war. This shows that the narrator speaks about the soldier begging more like asking for help during war if there in the urge to death. The Death of a Soldier concedes of low diction of the poetry passage. On line (11-12) Stanza 4 talks uses low diction word such as When the wind stops, and , over the heavens, The Clouds go, nevertheless, In their direction. Is not really a usage of these words the writer uses is more so of less cultivated which I think he purposely did for the reader to grasp quickly than of Dulce Et Decorum Est This shows by the writer doing so it makes the narrator to speak less cultivated and more of a clarification of the poem which you can reflect toward easily. Also both Dulce Et

Decorum Est and The Death of a soldier contain connotation which by that it can consults the attitude and sudden shift that may occur in these poems. Dulce Et Decorum Est and The Death of a Soldier are poem about a war that verifies the Unglorification that comes along during war as a solider. Two different poems when close analysis of the poem only thing that is of similarity is topic relation. Which both are speaking of war and death. But they both are two different understanding of how the speakers talks about war. The Death of a Soldier speaks of war but also to expect it and to more so accept what happened to the soldiers that are no more. While Dulce Et Decorum Est is talking how seeing the death of the soldier at war cause a significant effect on him. These poem also share some poetic devices but not many does it really share. And the them or advice both these poem share are of different. Yes they contain similarities on topic but yet theyre two different poems as a whole when going into a deeper analysis of these poems. And by that this is what I come to understand of the two poems Dulce Et Decorum Est and The Death of a Soldier this is how I conceive the poems.
