MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Sanitation keeps the City clean by collecting and disposing of
garbage, clearing the streets of litter, snow, and ice, cleaning debris from vacant lots,
tagging and removing derelict vehicles, and enforcing Health and Administrative Code
provisions, including rules governing the proper disposal of hazardous waste. In recent
years, the Department has expanded its scope of responsibility to include the increasingly
complex environmental problems facing the City. In addition to its traditional functions,
the Department is focusing on three major issues: developing a long-term waste
management strategy, improving agency operations to make them more environmentally
sound, and enforcing stricter environmental laws and regulations.
