MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Transportation is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of
pedestrian and vehicular traffic throughout the City. The Department builds and
maintains more than 5,800 miles of streets and highways and 846 bridges and tunnels, and
issues and monitors franchises and revocable consents, processing more than 12 million
summonses annually and providing an adjudicatory forum for those motorists who wish to
contest parking summonses. The Department also operates and maintains the Staten
Island Ferry and monitors private ferry services, regulates private bus companies, and
operates a paratransit system for people with disabilities.
