MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Health promotes and protects the health and quality of life of City
residents by enforcing compliance with the City Health Code and administering a broad
range of public health programs and services including, but not limited to: monitoring
and controlling tuberculosis, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other communicable diseases;
providing prevention and treatment programs for pregnant women, infants, children,
homeless families, and inmates; investigating and eliminating environmental health
hazards; inspecting restaurants and other facilities; and monitoring blood banks and
clinical laboratories. The Department's services also include prevention of AIDS and
HIV-related illnesses, and AIDS counseling, surveillance, testing, and research. The
Department's Office of Chief Medical Examiner provides forensic medical services.
