MISSION STATEMENT

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, which assumed responsibilities for the
former Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator, is responsible for overseeing various
City agencies involved in the field of public safety, including the PoliceDepartment, Fire
Department and Department of Correction, advising the Mayor on public safety policy
issues as well as criminal justice matters, and coordinating the activities of agencies
involved in the criminal justice system, including the Departments of Police, Correction,
Probation and Juvenile Justice, the court system and the District Attorneys. Additional
responsibilities include oversight of use of City funds for legal services to indigent
defendants, funding of alternatives to incarceration programs, implementation of the City
Court Facilities Master Plan; and the Mayor's Arson Strike Force. This Office also
performs the duties of the Coordinator of Criminal Justice as provided in Section 13 of
the New York City Charter.
