MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services is
mandated by the City Charter and State Mental Hygiene Law to plan, contract for, monitor, and evaluate local mental health, mental retardation, and alcoholism services in New York City. The Department administers approximately 820 programs through 334 contracts with more than 150 voluntary agencies, 14 Health and Hospitals Corporation facilities, the City's correctional facilities, Family Criminal Courts, and the Human Resources Administration. The services directly funded and monitored by the Department provide care to more than 425,000 persons each year, including emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, mentally retarded and developmentally disabled children and adults, mentally ill adults, alcoholics, persons referred from the courts and prisons for psychiatric services, and mentally disabled men and women.
