Dramatic Irony

The playwright shares with the audience knowledge of present/future circumstances of which other characters are ignorant. The other characters therefore unknowingly act in a manner which the audience recognises as inappropriate to the actual circumstances or expect the opposite of what we know fate holds in store or says something that anticipates the actual outcome, but not at all in the way the character intends.
