Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Basketball Content Area: Physical Education

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 2.3 Explain how growth in height and weight affects performance and inuences the selection of developmentally appropriate physical activities. 2.4 Identify the characteristics of a highly skilled performance for the purpose of improving ones own performance. 2.5 Diagram, explain, and justify offensive and defensive strategies in modied and team sports, games, and activities. 2.6 Develop and teach a team game that uses elements of spin or rebound, designated offensive and defensive space, a penalty system, and a scoring system. 5.1 Abide by the decisions of the officials, accept the outcome of the game, and show appreciation toward participants. 5.4 Identify the contributions of members of a group or team and reward members for accomplishing a task or goal. 5.5 Accept the roles of group members within the structure of a game or activity. 5.6 Describe leadership roles and responsibilities in the context of team games and activities. 5.7 Model support toward individuals of all ability levels and encourage others to be supportive and inclusive of all individuals. Big Ideas: History - We will learn the history of the game of basketball. Rules - We will learn the rules of the game. Position - We will learn the positions of basketball and their roles on the court. Skills - We will learn about and how to perform the skills of the game (ball handling, shooting, passing, defense) Strategy - We will learn about team strategies to employ on both offense and defense. Unit Goals and Objectives: Students will be able to identify the rules of the games as well as the positions on the court. Students will be able to shoot, pass, and dibble with proper form. Students will be able to work together as a team and devise strategies in a competitive situation. Unit Summary: This unit is designed for an 8th grade Physical Education class. It will teach students about the game of basketball, as well as how to play it. Students will first learn about the history of the game, as well as the rules and positions. We will also discuss the various skills required to play basketball. Another aspect of the game that will will cover is offense and defensive strategies. To accomplish learning all of this, we will have a lecture, webercise activity, and a graphic organizer. Before we can play the game, we must first learn it!
