Vivian Agbobu Oral communications: 120 7, March, 2012 Section: 2 The Importance of Spay and Neuter Statement of Fact:

I. Attention getter A. Have any you ever been driving around and had to suddenly slam on your breaks because a cat or two had to cross the street? How many of you have been to someones house that had way too many dogs are cats? Or have been chased home by a stray dog while you were a kid? Well I am sure that many of you may not be aware of this issue but according the American Human Associations article on Pet overpopulation written on February 7th 2010, United States is suffering from an overpopulation of animals and these situations are a few examples that shed light on the issue of overpopulation. Problem/These: (Showing the need) B. Also, according to the American Humane Association that written the article pet overpopulation on February, 7, 2010, Each year approximately 8 million stray and unwanted animals are taken in by shelters across the country. Unfortunately, about 3.7 million which is nearly half of these animals must be euthanized because good

homes cannot be found for them. For those of you that are not familiar with the team euthenization, its the term that refers to termination of the animals life which is done by a veterinarian and its also known as, pulling the plug. Since United States and the state of California is suffering from an overpopulation of stray dogs it is very important spay and neuter your pet and if you dont own a pet encourage other pet owners to spay or neuter there pet. (Thesis)Neutering or spaying your animal can not only control the animal overpopulation but it can improve your pets health and prevent your pet from getting certain disease, says the Oregon Veterinarian Medical Association that written the article Spay or Neuter your Pet written on 17, May, 2010.

C. (Fair Hearing) I know some of you may be thinking one of 3 things, we might end up killing off all the animals, I would want my dog to enjoy sex, or I would really like to see my dog or cats, offspring. Yet, the reality is, we just have way too many animals in shelters that have to be euthanized. D. (overview) Today I have a goal to persuade all of you to spay and neuter your pets at home if you havent already, also to persuade you to strongly encourage others with animals to spay and neuter them as well. I will do this by explaining what is spay and neuter,

explain all the health benefits of spay and neuter, and explain the commonly untrue myths of spay and neuter.

II. (Definition) Solution A. According to Andrew Kaplan that wrote the article, 10 reasons to spay or neuter or pet in healthy pet magazine (volume 4 issues 4 of winter 2011),Spaying, also known as overiohysterectomy, is performed on female animals where the reproductive organs are removed, which prevents unwanted pregnancy. Neutering refers to the surgery performed on male dogs that involves the castration of the testis. This procedure is very minor and only takes about an hour to perform the recovery period is very short. With this procedure anesthesia is used and is completely painless to the animal and this procedure can be done as soon as early as six months on your pet. Also For some people that are concerned about ruing the manhood of your male animal since the testies are removed in this procedure. There are actually silicon testicular implants to put in your dog. This procedure of spay and neuter can definitely improve the overpopulation issue. Factual illustration(s) III. Second Main Point

A. Laura J. Sanborn who wrote the article, The long term health risk and benefits associated with spay and neuter on www.naionline.org states. The health benefits of pets that are spayed and neuter outweigh the dangerous health complications that can occur with indicted pets. 1. One benefit is if your animal is a female it will not get its monthly cycle, yes thats right female dogs get monthly cycles as well. So this means there will be definitely less of a mess around the backyard and outside. This also means a smaller chance of infections. 2. According to the the article 10 reasons to spay or neuter your pet, female cats are less likely to have breast cancer if spayed before their first cycle. 3. Also according to this article For males that are neutered they have a smaller chance of getting testicular cancer or prostate cancer 4. Neutered male dogs typically act more behaved than unneutered male dogs because unneutered dogs like making their territory around the house by urinating on curtains, legs of tables and chairs. 5. A really big and important benefit of spay and neuter is your dog or cat is less likely to wander off to seek other animals, therefore this reduces your chance of your animal to get into dog fights, frighten children, or to tragically get hit by car. B. These benefits can actually benefit your community as well, spaying or neutering does not only benefit the animal and the owner it benefits others as well.

Explanation: IIII Third Main Point. A. Of course like any other subject there a many untrue myths about spay and neuter that many of you probably have heard of which include: 1. Your pet will gain weight and become inactive, this isnt true. 2. Another myth is the owner thinks it may change the personality of the pet. This is also untrue. A prime example is my Chihuahua named Bella before and after her surgery she has always been a very exciting character. Visualize B. There may be a few of you that are not animal owners and probably dont feel the need to encourage other pet owners to spay and neuter. Yet just imagine seeing less dogs or cats on the road badly injured because they were hit by cars or seeing less starving homeless puppies. Better yet imagine hearing less about stray dog attacking people .Spay and neuter can reduce these sad situations that are caused by overpopulation. Call For Attention: IV. I know a select few of you are thinking, I dont have a pet so why should I care? According to the American Humane Associations article Pet Overpopulation, on Americanhuman.org All of us are affected by animal overpopulation. Millions of tax dollars are spent annually to shelter and care for stray, abandoned and unwanted pets. Of course much of that money is spent to euthanize these animals when homes cannot be found. Human health is threatened by the danger of transmittable diseases (including rabies) from animal bites and attacks. In the future when you have animal spaying or neuter can save your animals and someone elses life. If your animal isnt spayed or neutered I strongly

believe you should consider doing so. It will make a big difference in your household and in your community, therefore I strongly urge you all to spay and neuter your pets and to convince others with pets to do so as well. If you want to spay or neuter your pet currently there are many non-profit organizations that offer free spay and neuter services. A. (Review) Hopefully today I accomplished my goal of persuading you that spay and neuter is necessary to be done on all pets by explaining what spay and neuter is, the benefits of spay and neuter, the most common myths of spay and neuter.
