Incantation is an attempt to write a primarily monodic work for harpsichord. The melody is highly ornamented, to give a heightened sense of harmony and gesture. The result reminds me of certain types of violin playing and doina singing I heard while in Romania.
I wrote this little piece for harpsichordist Jenny Bradshaw. Doug Bush approached me about writing something for Jenny and emphasized very strongly that the piece must be short. He apparently wanted the 21st century represented on her recital without it being a major component. Jenny premiered it at a family recital in May, 2013. It proved to be the last time I would see Doug in good health.
