Chapter 3 Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities I.

Distributive Property- The distributive property is an equation where there are parentheses around an addition problem or a double or above number and they are being multiplied by a certain number. You multiply the number by the number the rst digit including the zeros and multiply the second digit and add those together. Example: 3(42) ! ! 3x40=120 3x2=6 ! ! 120+6=126 ! ! 126 Associative Property of Addition/Multiplication- Addition- If three or more number are being added the answer will always be the same. You can move the parentheses however you want or change because it wont change. Multiplication- If three or more numbers are being multiplied you can move the parentheses and keep the same answer. Example: 3+(4+5)= (3+4)+5 Example: 3(4x5)= (3x4)5 Commutative Property of Addition/Multiplication- Addition- If three or more numbers are being added or multiplied you can change the order of how they are being added or multiplied. Example: 5+6+2=2+5+6 Example: 5x6x2=2x5x6

II.
Simplify this ! ! ! 4(7x - 3) + 2x First you have to use the distributive property, so 4 times 7x is 28x and 4 times 3 is 12. Then you have 28x-12+2x. Then you have to combine like terms, which are 28x plus 2x equals 30x. Now you have 30x-12, which is as far as you can get simplifying this equation. 4(7x - 3) + 2x 28x - 12 +2x 30x - 12

! Solve ! ! ! 7x - 10 - 9x = 11/6 The rst thing you have to do is combine like terms. 7x minus 9x is -2x. Now you have -2x - 10= 11/6. Now cancel out the 10 by taking away 10 from the left and then the right. Now you have -2x= -8 1/6. Divide the -2 by -2 and than divide -8 1/6 by -2 because what you do to one side you must do to the other. Now you have x= 4 1/12. 7x - 10 - 9x = 11/6 -2x - 10 = 11/6 -2x = -8 1/6 x = 4 1/12

IV.
! ! Solve ! 5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6 You have to start with nding the least common denominator for all of these numbers. In this case it is 6 because 3 goes into 6, 2 goes into 6, and of course 6 goes into 6. So you have to multiply every term by 6. That makes it 5x + 2x - 3 = 11. Now combine like terms for 5x + 2x to get 7x - 3 = 11. Now cancel out the 3 by adding 3 to both sides. That makes it 7x = 14. Now divide the seven on both sides to get x = 2. 5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6 5x + 2x - 3 = 11 7x - 3 = 11 7x = 14 x=2

! Graph the Inequality ! ! 2 " x/-5 First you do what you did last time by multiplying everything by -5 this time to get -10 " x. Since we had to carry over a negative we have to switch the inequality sign. Now it is -10 # x. Now you have to graph it. Since -10 is bigger or equal to you must make a line going down the line. Since -10 is part of the solution it must be part of the line.

-10

-5 0 -----l------l---

VI.
-4x + 4 # -8 -4x # -12 x"3 0 1 2 3 4 --l---l---l---l---l

VII.
! Open Circle! ! Closed Circle An open circle when graphing an inequality means that the number by it is not part of the solution. So it could have only been greater than or less than. A closed circle when graphing an inequality means that the number could possibly be the variable. This happen when it is at least or at most.

1. Chris wants to buy a bicycle that costs $160. If she saves $12 each week, what is the fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bicycle?

2. Mark worked on math homework less than 1/3 the amount of time that his brother did. If Mark spent 25 minutes on his math homework, how much time did his brother spend on his math homework?

3. One third of a number, decreased by thirty-six is at most twenty-two. Find the number.
