This topic will be presented through the use of text, news and journal articles, and videos. Students will participate in weekly discussions, complete quizzes and write papers for each lesson. Course Prerequisites: None Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Recognize the problems facing the correctional system in America 2. Describe how these problems affect the social, economic and political state of America 3. Identify the causes for overcrowding in America's prisons 4. Discuss current efforts to reduce incarceration and their effectiveness 5. Discuss the correctional systems and incarceration policies for other countries

6. Identify countries with low incarceration rates and effective correctional systems 7. Discuss alternatives programs that may reduce incarceration in America

Assignments The student ensures assignments meet the highest presentation standards and are professional in appearance. Grammar, punctuation and spelling must be correct in all written submissions. All assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date indicated on the syllabus. Unless the professor approves a late submission prior to this time, only half-credit will be awarded for assignments submitted within 24 hours. No credit will be given for assignments turned in later than this time. All research papers must be written in APA, 6th edition. Academic Integrity
