WHAT ARE INQUIRY BASED METHODS?

Inquiry based methods are used to promote learning by asking questions. Students use their senses to gather information about the topic they are learning about, by observing and exploring. Inquiry based learning is more hands on and student centered, rather than teacher centered. There are several steps to inquiry based learning. 1.) Question - Students are encouraged to ask questions and discover their own answers through hands on experiments or research. 2.) Hypothesis - After the students have asked their questions, they use prior knowledge to try and answer it. 3.) Experimental Design -Students conduct an experiment and answer their question by testing the hypothesis and building their knowledge according to the results. 4.) Analyze Data - Students collect the data from their experiment in to answer their question. Students interpret the data and look for any relationships between variables. 5.) Reach Conclusions- Students compare their hypothesis to the results and think critically over what the results mean. 6.) Communicate Results- Students share and compare results with each other.

exceptional. These students have cognitive, psychological, and academic needs that appear distinct from those of either gifted populations or those with LD (Douglass & Tieso, 2008). There are two categories of twice exceptional students. The first is where the students disability is mild and it is masked by the students giftedness. The second is where the disability is so severe that it masks the giftedness.

TEACHING TWICE EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS (ADHD)

Using Inquiry Based Methods

THE MOST EFFECTIVE & EFFICIENT PROCESS OF IMPLEMENTATION

This strategy is most effective in subjects the student is not very interested in. It opens the door for the student to approach the task at hand in an angle that he/she can manage. Writing is a good example of where inquiry based learning can be used. Writing tends to take more time than other subjects. The student is required to sit at a desk and focus on what he/she is writing.

HOW TO EXPLAIN ACOMMODATION TO STUDENT

The student should be made aware of this accommodation during the IEP/GEP meeting. It is best to do it when discussing the students strengths. The best way to refer to a students disability is to focus on the positive aspect of it. For example with a student with ADHD the focus can be on the energy the student has

Students who are twice exceptional (ADHD) require stimulus. These students learn best when there is buzz in the classroom and have visuals. Encourage students to use timelines, charts, and graphic organizers when collecting data as this will help them grasp the concept better.

and how that will help him accomplish more in the

classroom.

HOW AND WHEN IS IT BENEFICIAL?

Inquiry based methods can be used in all subjects form math and science to history and music. Students with ADHD have trouble concentrating and doing the same thing for a long period of time. They learn better by breaking down tasks into manageable segments and doing hands on (kinesthetic) assignments. Students who are gifted and have ADHD need to be challenged so they do not become bored. Inquiry based learning provides just that. It encourages the student to find out things for himself and identify misconception. It encourages the student to think like an expert in the field and to engage in divergent thinking.
