Avery Hodges, 10-10-13 Professor Raymond English1103 The German Ancestors Taking in all of the history of my family and

finding out where both sides of my family comes from has been an enlightening experience so far. Talking to some of my family on my Dads side of the family, I have discovered that I come from German descent. The (Flag of Germany) is lined horizontally three times with the top color being black, middle color being red, and the bottom of the flag being gold. The flag came from republican democracy after World War One ended. The flag was first used in the early nineteenth century. The National Anthem for Germany is called (Deutschlandlied). The song has been the (Song for Germany) since 1922, except for the eastern part. However since World War Two, only the third stanza is used. Although the song wasnt off icially named the National Anthem until the twentieth century, the song was actually composed in the late eighteen hundreds by Joseph Hay dn. The song is very influential and patriotic to the people of Germany and my elders. I personally will never be able to be a citizen of Germany due to the (German nationality law). It states that I have to be a resident in Germany for at least eight years, have a legal representative, and a lot of other rules as well. I would also need to have a parent that is a citizen of Germany; which I do not. I am perfectly fine to not be considered a German citizen because I love America and will always be American. The image Germany has on history is not

necessarily the best, considering the innocent people that were killed in World War Two just because of religion. However they have had impacts on the car industry by producing the Volkswagen. In ("Top 10 Things the Nazis Got Right") Hitler wanted the car to resemble a beetle, and thus the name for a great car was created. The beetle in the thirties and forties was a car that almost every man could afford and thats what the people wanted.
