Charlie Williams Unit: Injury Prevention and Safety Topic: Prevention for vision, hearing, and dental health

Grade: 7th Vision Hearing and Dental Health Objectives: Following instruction the student will: a. List on a blank piece of paper ways to prevent situations that might harm vision, hearing, and dental health. b. Match situations that might harm vision, hearing, or dental health on a worksheet. Level of cognition: a. Cognitive - knowledge b. Cognitive - knowledge Standards: 1.12.S - Identify ways to prevent situations that might harm vision, hearing, or dental health. Introductory Set (10 min): 1. Students will begin class by writing down the agenda, homework, and objective for the day. 2. Student will then take out a piece of paper. 3. On the blank paper have students answer following questions. o Have you every felt like you have harmed your vision, hearing, or dental health at some time in your life? o Do you think you could have prevented those situations? 4. Ask for responses from students to share with the class. 5. At this time explain to students they will be learning about how to prevent situations that might harm their vision, hearing, or dental health Procedure (57 to 60 min):

1. Before class starts have introductory questions written on the board. Have students answer question and then discuss. (10 min.) 2. Lecture from PowerPoint on preventing situations that might harm vision, hearing, or dental health. (10 min.) 3. Have students brake into groups working with the person behind them and hand out articles on preventing situations that might harm vision, hearing, or dental health. (5 min.) 4. Have them read the article and at the same time have them list six ways to prevent situations that may harm hearing, vision, or dental health (3 ways for each category). (15 min.) 5. Have students return desks back to normal and call on a couple of students to discuss answers. (10 min) 6. Pass out matching worksheet on ways to prevent situations that may harm vision, hearing, or dental health. (5 min.) 7. If students dont finish work sheet have them finish it for homework and if they did finish it have them hang on to it so they can turn it in tomorrow. 8. Before class ends give them a couple of situations and ask them if they would be harmful. Have all students raise one finger for no and two fingers for yes. (2 min.) a. Example situations: i. I went to a really loud Taylor Swift concert could that be harmful? ii. At the beach on Saturday I keep looking at the sun for long period of time. iii. My friends and me have jawbreaker contest to see who can eat the most the fastest. Materials: Projector PowerPoint Dry erase markers hand out worksheet
