Rationale Whenever !anning !essons for "y c!ass# I a!ways first !oo$ at the %irginia &e art"ent of Education's (%&)E* standards of !earning+ By doing this I a" a,!e to deter"ine what it is e-act!y that the students need to !earn# what the o,.ectives are# how I can teach it# and even how I cou!d differentiate it+ /his not on!y he! s "e ,e re ared for "y !essons# ,ut it a!so he! s "e understand how to "a$e the !essons engaging for "y students+ It a!so he! s "e tai!or "y !essons to "eet the needs of "y students ,y $nowing where they need to ,e and how to get the" to that goa!+ I was a,!e to do this for the first grade c!ass I taught during "y student teaching+ According to the %&)E's standards of !earning# first grade students are re0uired use $now!edge of a! ha,etica! order ,y first !etter+ When I first introduced this to "y c!ass I descri,ed it as utting words in 1AB21 order+ I then de"onstrated this ,y .ust three words u on the s"art,oard# and I showed the" that to ut those words in AB2 order we needed to !oo$ at the first !etter of each then+ I wou!d then guide the" to he! ing "e ut the" in a! ha,etica! order ,y saying things such as 1&oes 2 co"e ,efore 3 and /4 /hen it "ust go first right41 After doing this a few ti"es so that the students had a gras of it# I then ic$ four students at a ti"e to co"e u to the front of the c!ass+ /he rest of the students wou!d then he! "e rearrange the four I had ca!!ed into a! ha,etica! order ,y their first na"es+ /o further he! the" gras this conce t I created a !anguage arts center with a AB2 stac$ing ga"e+ In this center there is a stac$ of five foa" cu s each with a different word written on the ri" of the cu where it can sti!! ,e seen even when stac$ed+ /he students then have to stac$ the cu s in a! ha,etica! order+
