Our Grade 2 students watching how shapes can be something else through the use of imagination.

Tuning In
We started this unit by inviting artists to conduct workshops for the students. Artists Ben and Jamie Bermudez helped us show our creativity in visual arts through the lines and shapes that we used in making bigger pictures.

Tuning In
After the workshop, we tried to visualize how our mind would look like from the inside. In this activity, we made scrappy caps to show what kind of artists we are, as represented by our hats. After which, we tried to define what art is, its different forms and function and its connection to the people so that well be able to identify what we already know about the unit.

Finding Out
The three big questions that drove the inquiry were: What are the different forms of art? (form) How is art used? (function) How is art connected to the culture and its people? (connection) To answer these questions, we visited the Angono Petroglyphs in Binangonan to see the oldest art form in the Philippines, Blanco Museum to see the function of the arts which is a to express ones self, to show creativity, to depict an activity and culture in a certain place. We also visited the Ayala Museum and National Museum to see a variety of art form and look at how arts is connected to the culture of people. To widen our perspective further, we took the opportunity to observe and present during the Linggo ng Wika to show how people express themselves in many different ways.

We are observing how arts appear in different forms.

Finding Out
We looked at different artifacts, books and pictures that enabled us to create questions that will drive our inquiry. Through these questions, we started finding out through the lens of the key concepts form, function and connection.
.

Finding Out
We had shared and group inquiry. We talked about Literary Arts, Functional Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Fashion and Clothing.

Sorting Out
We came up with a 15 minute simultaneous presentation during the Buwan ng Wika celebration to show how Region 1 is unique in terms of their dances, food, clothing, architecture, festivals, music, language and the like.

Sorting Out
We reflected on the question What is art? after the field trips and watching videos about the topic. After which, we tried to show our answer to that question through either an abstract or figurative painting. In our expert groups, we tried to sort out what we know through felt paper art. We tried to show our understanding about the forms and functions of the arts.

Going

Further

Now that we already know more about the form, function and connection of the arts to the people, we went further by learning concepts that will enable us to appreciate art such as, lines, shapes, colors, light and senses. We found out more about these science concepts by watching videos, experimenting and reading texts about the topic. We sorted out what we have through an art work.

Action Summative Engagement

Now that we have deepened our understanding about the arts, we showed our knowledge by presenting what we found out in an exhibit featuring our art works. We also made murals to show how DIS is different from other communities. The purpose of this activity is to let people know how arts is used to deliver messages and to show how we can preserve the DIS culture through an art work.

Completing our Writing Process

Discipline Integration English

We were able to find out the different features of an instructional text by developing our love for reading. After knowing its organizational features, we discussed its language features such as the nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We were able to develop our skills in identifying a text as fiction or non-fiction. We were able to do this by recognizing key features of instructional texts. After which, we tried writing our own instructions by writing how to do origami art.

Reading our own recount

In this unit, we focused on writing recounts. We first found out how to write simple sentences and identified the difference between a sentence and a phrase. We emphasized the use of punctuation marks and the importance of capitalization. After which, the whole class tried to write simple recounts about the activities we've participated in such as Buwan ng Wika and Field trips to Angono Petroglyphs, Blanco Museum, Ayala Museum, and National Museum. To show our understanding on how recount texts are written, we came up with our own simple recount of our most memorable vacation.

Analysing our errors and reflecting on what we can do to improve.

Discipline Integration Math

After our lessons on learning how to read, write and model numbers 11000, we used mathematical vocabulary, and created describing and extending patterns through learning the addition and subtraction operations. We developed the skills in analysing word problems, doing mental calculations and applying the concept of numbers through these operations. We were able to do this by using manipulatives, drills and team games.

Discipline Integration Music

In this unit, we were able to explore long and short sounds and how they affect music (many short sounds make music feel fast and many long sounds make music feel slow). We created our own symbols for long and short sounds and we conducted the class using these symbols. We made long and short sounds on instruments and creatively thought of other things that has and can be long or short. We composed our own sequence of long and short sounds and played them on instruments in front of the class.

Discipline Integration

Visual Arts

We learned about the use of painting and drawing as a means of expression, particularly about mural paintings or paintings created by more than one artist. Our class developed communication skills as our expression ranged from visual to verbal. We looked into Form as we became aware on how our paintings and drawings will appear. We began to understand how painting and drawing expresses ones ideas.

Discipline Integration

Physical Education
We learned how to dance Binasuan for the Buwan ng Wika presentation in the second unit. Dancing is a type of art and can be used as a form of expression. We discovered that Binasuan originated in Pangasinan. Dancers of Binasuan exhibit excellent balancing skills in holding the glasses. We developed our coordination and balancing skill as well in this unit.

Discipline Integration

Information Technology
We were able to create and illustrate on how we can express ourselves using MS Powerpoint by sharing and working together presenting different form of expression visually with use of pictures and images.

We were able to use Sebran software to familiarize ourselves in numeracy and literacy and use MS office to learn and be more familiar with desktop publishing

Discipline Integration Library

In connection with the Buwan ng Wika Celebration, we were able to know more about the Filipiniana books in the Library. We were able to read these books and include them in their reading log.
We were able to practice our research skills focusing Natural disasters and Calamities, as connected what happened when the Philippines was devastated by the monsoon rains. We read books related to that topic and took down notes as well as the references that they used while doing the research. We were able to know and identify the difference between a fiction and nonfiction book through an activity. We were able to know about the definition and purpose of an index and table of contents in using a nonfiction book. We were given an activity in alphabetizing words. This activity will help them in locating fiction books in the shelf since fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the authors surname.
