Prison guards such as Erik Messner, 24 of Springfield, PA was caught helping inmates get the illegal substances they desire. Michael Price, from daily local news, was lucky enough to catch this story. Price was also able to find out that inmates friends and family will bring in it while getting time to spend with them through different methods.

Technology

According to Power, Criminal Justice Director, at University of Columbia, there are new security cameras being placed in prisons in the North which are which are bullet resistant. New millimeter wave imaging system are also becoming available, says Thomas Dohman.

Inmates think..

Terry Thornton, spokeswoman of corrections and rehabilitation, states the prison walls are not a boundary anymore. According to Inside Time, in 2009 the prisoner Brian Plump stated he can get an illegal drug within an hour if he wanted.

Are drugs a serious problem

According to Taylor Brooke, British journalist of substance, the inmates are getting access to any drug, so it makes it harder for them to stop the addiction. The amount of people put into jail with a drug addiction has tripled over the past decade.

Helping the drug issue

Allen L Ault, chief project at NIC in Washington, DC indicated new drug treatment services are becoming available. Drugs are affecting the safety of both staff and inmates. The approach is to reward staff and inmates for providing information which leads to drug trafficking sources and identification.

Types of drugs

According to a 2012 study conducted by Columbus Dispatch, marijuana is the top drug in prisons. Additional drugs inmates were tested positive for included opiates, cocaine, alcohol, oxycodone and heroin.

Prison gangs gone bad

Drugs are the primary reason many

prisoners are involved with gangs. According to Mike Ruff, a corrections department special agent, something that appears to be a riot between different gangs is not necessarily because theyre rivals its because of a drug deal gone bad. These gangs are selling drugs ten times the price on the street. Ruff stated the gangs are the main source of drugs for these inmates.

Creative ways drugs get in

Inmates are getting drugs through soda cans, babies diapers and kisses when family or friends visit according to Glenn Fine, the Justice Department Inspector General. The New York Times reports drugs are also coming in by pills crushed and spread into a paste on a stamp or spreading in a childrens art work.
