LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Your Name: Keny Mcalister Title of Lesson: My Footprint Grade: 2nd STANDARDS NOTE: Please

list at least two complete standards your lesson plan covers. [Common Core State Standards (math and language arts), Next Generation Science Standards (science), Arizona State Social Studies Standards (social studies)]. Strand 5 Economics: Concept 1: Foundations of Economics PO 1. Discuss how scarcity requires people to make choices due to their unlimited needs and wants with limited resources. (2.W.7) Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations). LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW Provide an overview/synopsis of the lesson and the topics that it will cover. This lesson will cover the impacts humans have on their environment as an ecological footprint. The students will also get an idea of how they impact the world. OBJECTIVES Describe what you want students to know/be able to do as a result of the lesson. For example, Students will be able to The students will be able to get an idea of how they impact the world and the resources that are available, but in short supply by researching the impacts using given sites. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION What measures will you use to know if your students met the objectives? The students will report their results, with how many Earths are used to support their way of living. The students will record the types of resources that they use the most of and write why they think that is the resource they use the most. PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE What will students need to know prior to completing this lesson and how will you access their prior knowledge? The students will be referred back to the previous lesson of the kinds of materials that humans use. If this is the first lesson taught then as a class the teacher and students can come up with a list of the kind of resources used. This will allow the students to then see what affects they have when using these resources themselves. MATERIALS List of required materials. The students will need access to a computer, either computer lab or school laptops with internet access. Paper to write down results or even better a Journal Internet access to the following sites: o http://www.rsc.org/Education/Teachers/Resources/jesei/ecofoot/students.htm o http://www.bestfootforward.com/resources/ecological-footprint/ ** recommended o http://www.earthday.org/footprint-calculator ** recommended o http://www.myfootprint.org/

VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS List of key vocabulary terms. Footprint- The use of materials or resources that one uses, which gives off CO2. CO2- Carbon Dioxide is the gas that is released into the air TEACHING PROCEDURES Procedural Steps (Step by step instructions for teaching the lesson): The teacher will make a connection with the different types of resources that humans use and if the previous lesson for Day 1 was taught it will be easier. The teacher will then ask the students if they know what a footprint is. The teacher will define footprint and also Carbon dioxide. Before the class begins exploring the sites for their footprints the teacher will model for the students his/her footprint using one of the sites. The students will then be told by the teacher to write down the results of their footprint making sure

that they include how many planets it would take to support their living. Also it would be important for the next lesson if the students are to record the types of resources that they use and as noted in the quizzes or websites given. After the students have explored their footprints, the class will come back together to share out how many Earths it takes to support their living. As a class they can get an average of the entire class. RESOURCES List any references you used to create this lesson. If you borrowed ideas from any lesson plans please note them here. Use APA format. This lesson was thought of originally although there have been many higher level lessons that have been created, but in this case it is modified for 2nd graders. Define the way of thinking you selected and used in this lesson plan. Remember, this should be included meaningfully in the lesson plan. It is very important for students to see how they as individuals affect their environment by the things they do on a regular basis. For the calculators they use to measure their footprints are shown individually based, but when they bring their results together as a class they can put that into perspective with the average of 24 students in a classroom they make a huge impact. After that conclusion what would they think about 100+ would have on the environment? This is future and values thinking, because the students will see their impacts today and think about changing what it would be like tomorrow.
