Toilet Training Orientation

Toilet training should be a positive learning experience for children. It should take a short period of time if the
child is ready. Problems in toilet training arise when adults are inattentive to the childs lack of readiness.
Pressuring a child through weeks of unsuccessful experiences makes parents feel frustrated and the child feel
afraid or ashamed. This major transition should not be forced or rushed on child.
Toilet training should be done on an individual basis because readiness is individual. We want to help parents
understand that timing for toilet training is as individual as learning to walk. There is no right age by which
children should be toilet trained.
Your child may show that he/she is ready for toilet training when he or she:
1. Is weaned from the bottle
2. Can communicate verbally or through actions when he/she need to go to the toilet
3. Does not like being wet
4. Stays dry through the night
5. Shows an interest in toileting
Parents are responsible for initiating toilet learning at home. Once the child has demonstrated success in
toileting at home, parents should request a conference with the Toddler Supervisor and the Lead Program
Assistant to discuss toilet learning
PROCEDURES:
1. Communication between parents and staff is essential and more frequently necessary at this time.
a. Parents and program assistants are encouraged to be consistent in their methods and language
used in toilet learning.
2. Parents must determine from the beginning if their child is going to sit or stand and inform the
Program Assistants.
a. Parents should put their child on the toilet at the center in the morning and again before
leaving to reinforce positive behavior.
3. During the toilet learning process, parents may choose to continue to put a diaper/pull-up on their
child or dress their child in training pants/underwear. Please inform the caregiver if the child is in
underpants.
4. Three pairs of extra clothes including socks must be brought to the Center daily all labeled with
the childs name. An extra pair of shoes is also required.
a. Program Assistants will not wash out clothes due to health regulations
5. Parents must dress children in clothing which the child can easily put on and take off. This is most
important because it fosters independence and builds self-esteem.
a. Elastic waistband pants are best; no belts, overalls, or T-shirts with snaps between the legs, or
dresses because children cannot see to pull down underwear.
b. High top shoes with long laces make it difficult for children to get their shoes on and off.
