-Select a topic with multiple answers

and collect all necessary materials: -When identifying a topic for a discussion one that is controversial or allows for differences in interpretation is best. -The Specific Learning objectives are to develop deeper more analytical thinking, practice critical thinking, and social development. -Developing student knowledge: because knowledge is needed in order to discuss a topic this instructional strategy will usually follow a lesson focused on understanding a topic. -Establishing structure: Is necessary because without structure discussions will usually fall apart easily and accomplish nothing.

- Uses a three stage process: -Introduction: Has the purpose of getting the classes attention and capturing their focus, usually with a task for them to do that activates prior knowledge. -Exploration: Is the phase where students focus on the topic/issue at hand and share their perspectives while being monitored, allows the discussion to advance and meet objectives -Closure: is a review or summarization at the end of the lesson that informs students of what occurred that day. - This step in the discussion can take many different forms, but is always an action that gets the students involved

-Assessments can take place in two main ways: - Summative- is through essay related items or drawing pictures to assess content knowledge and critical thinking. -Formative- is through informal observations to assess things like social development and can be done by the students taking notes during their collaboration.

-The motivation for students to participate is that it capitalizes on students innate social nature. People love talking about things that are controversial. Also, there is no right or wrong answer to this kind of models questions so it allows students to gain confidence without the fear of failure.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

The important thing to remember about this is that it is a strategy that enhances social skills such as listening and communicating while motivating student-student interaction. It exposes students to different vies that promote critical thinking skills while developing their views.
