ENERGY MONITORING SYSTEM USING SENSOR NETWORKS IN RESIDENTIAL HOUSES

Abstract:
The energy consumption of consumer electronics has been increasing over the past half century. Due to the growing importance of energy saving, many researches about the energy savings of information and communication technology have been presented. Providing residents with information on their energy use has become a feasible option to promote energy savings in the residential sector. In this paper, a home energy management system, particularly an energy monitoring system using sensor networks, is described.

Existing system:
In existing system the power consumed by each device in different rooms are separately measured and transmitted. In a common node all the information is fetched and analyzed. The disadvantage here is the hardware complexity.

Proposed system:
In the proposed system, the hardware complexity is eliminated by using the existing power line for communication. The current taken by each device in each room is measured and transmitted through the power line using PLC Modem. The Microcontroller measures the current consumed by device1 and device2 and transmits it through the PLC modem. At the other end the same is received through the PLC modem and given back to the main controller. The main controller transmits all the information received to the data collecting node through Zigbee.
