1. A solution of Copper (II) Chloride is electrolyzed. Observe the two electrodes. Procedure: Take the solution of Copper (II) chloride and place the wire with cork on the end into the liquid. Hold a battery to the other end. Equation: CuCl2(aq) Cu (s) + Cl2 (g) Before: Clear, blue liquid After: Orange-brown metal on one electrode, bubbles forming on the other Type: Decomposition Reaction Oxidized: Cu in CuCl2 Reduced: Cl in CuCl2 2. Zinc metal and iodine solid are mixed and react in the presence of water (water is not a reactant) Procedure: Add both zinc metal and iodine solid into a beaker of water Equation: Zn (s) + I2 (s) --> ZnI2 (aq) Before: Gray metal gray solid mixed into clear liquid After: Clear liquid, no solids Type: Synthesis Oxidized: Zn (s) Reduced: I2 (s) 3. Zinc iodide solution is electrolyzed. Procedure

In a petri dish, dissolve a small amount of zinc iodide in 20 mL distilled water. Electrolyze the solution with the cork with 2 pins and the battery. After observing, add in 3 drops of starch solution. Equation: ZnI2 (aq) --> Zn (s) + I2 (g) Before: Clear solution After: One electrode with a dark gray metal forming, another one with a brown cloud of substance Type: Decomposition Oxidized: I2 in ZnI2 (aq) Reduced: Zn in ZnI2 (aq)

4. Sodium metal is added to water. Procedure: Place a piece of sodium metal into a container of water. Equation: 2Na (s) + 2H2O (l) 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g) Before: Silver/grey solid and clear liquid After: Clear liquid, bubbles Type: Single Replacement Oxidised: Na Reduced: H+ in H2O

5. Magnesium metal is added to hydrochloric acid. Procedure: Sand a piece of magnesium metal. Add 2 cm of hydrochloric acid and the magnesium metal in a test tube. Use finger to close up the top of the test tube. Light up a wooden splint. Let finger go and quickly place the burning splint into the test tube without touching the liquid. Equation:

Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g) Before: Silver solid, clear solution After: Bubbles in clear solution Type: Single Replacement Oxidised: Mg Reduced: H+ in HCl

6. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) decomposes Procedure: Add some drops of potassium iodide solution to about 2cm deep hydrogen peroxide in a test tube, then add the hydrogen peroxide to the solution. Equation: 2(H2O2) (l) --> 2H2O (l) + O2 (g) Before: Clear liquid, with a yellow-colored liquid added After: Bubbles formed, yellow solution Type: Decomposition Oxidized: O2 in (H2O2) (l) Reduced: None

7. Solid copper (II) carbonate is heated and one of the resulting products is bubbled through limewater. Procedure: Heat copper (II) carbonate Watch CO2 gas form precipitate with limewater Equation: CuCO3 (s) + heat CuO (s) + CO2 (g) Ca(OH)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) H2O (l) + CaCO3 (s) Before: Green powder, clear solution After: Black powder, white precipitate in solution

Type: Double Replacement Oxidised: None Reduced: None Google doc: https://docs.google.com/a/hkis.edu.hk/document/d/1wq6UUTjfMA7STyywV7z8xRnkJVIVDxfwHCeIsIyGRA/edit
