Identify Topics-may come from standards, textbooks, curriculum guides Specifying learning objectivesdecide what you want students to know about the topic; provides framework for planning and implementing Prepare examples and nonexamples- create or find examples and nonexamples relating to topic; nonexamples are important when teaching closely related concepts; must have high quality and a variety of examples; apply real-world examples ; concrete materials (real thing) , pictures, models, and vignettes (short case studies) , simulation and role play are different types of examples; use technology to create high quality examples

Intro- attract students attention and establish the focus of the lesson; provide framework and examples The open-ended phase-present students with examples and ask the students to make observations and comparisons of the examples. The convergent phase- ask more specific questions designed to guide the students to an understanding of the concept or generalization Closure and application-guide the students to a definition of the concept or a statement of the generalization, and the students apply their understanding in a new context.

Aligning Assessments and Objectives- must be sure that objectives, learning activities, and assessments are aligned Using assessment to Increase Learning- assessment items or tasks must measure more than knowledge and recall; detailed feedback and discussion are essential

Student Involvement and Success- involving students in conversation and actively participating, keeps interest high; promote involvement with openended questions; success is virtually assured therefore students are more willing to participate Sense of the Unknownintrinsically motivated due to curiosity

So what? What is important to understand about this?

When using this model, present students with examples and non-examples that illustrate the content you want them to understand and guide their thinking which requires the teacher to be skilled in questioning and guiding. Students should be able to provide feedback through discussion to display critical thinking.
