Planning for Whole-Group Instruction Identifying a factual topic with convergent answer, specifying clear learning objectives, preparing high quality examples Organized Groups Groups with 4-5 members and mixed abilities, gender, ethnicity Team Study High quality study materials aligned with objectives, requires convergent answers like math problems Calculating Base Score and Improvement Points Equal opportunity for success by awarding improvement points. Base score are the students past grades.
Intro- presents, explains and models the skills or applications of concepts, principles, generalizations, and rules and provide for guided practice. Transitions- anticipate logistical problems in advance. Make poster with group memberships, location in the room for teams, procedures for obtaining and turning in materials, time frames. Team Study- allows students to practice new concepts and receive feedback from group members; monitor groups and intervene when necessary, call attention to productive groups.
Improvement Points- do not penalize top students, do not distort students actual level of achievement Observing Group Work- make students aware of their interactions in groups and how these interactions affect their learning
This model is used to teach students how to work cooperatively and find a convergent answer. It is important to provide feedback to students, and motivate them to improve their individual scores or skills while helping others.
