Teacher Candidate: Elizabeth Snider Subject/Grade: 6th Grade EEDA Learning Objective:

Lesson # 2 Date and Time of Lesson: Unsure

Students will be able to identify a career from a career cluster and will be able to set career/educational goals that would be necessary to reach their individual careers.

Alignment with Standards EEDA: Standard 6th-8th Grade Standard 3: Students will explore careers and connection of school to work. Competencies: 2. Explain knowledge of career clusters and career resources. 4. Explore career choices and career clusters to develop realistic career goals. 5. Demonstrate decision-making skills to select a career/ education path and complete a plan for high school and beyond. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students will use group work and discussion skills to work with other students. They should know how to contribute positive ideas to develop the discussion. Students do not need content knowledge, but will use ELA skills to write a short paragraph. This is developmentally appropriate for 6th graders they are coming to a point in their education where they are going to have to make decisions that will affect their career paths in the future. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
What assessment(s) will you use to determine student learning (pre, during, post)? Each objective should be aligned with an assessment. Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment- Students will participate in a bell rings that ask students what career interest them and if they have goals set in place to reach that career. During Assessment- Students will be informally assessed by the teacher. The teacher will come around to make sure they are correctly doing their work and staying on task. If students are not on track the teacher will redirect them and give them the necessary information to finish the activity. Post- Assessment- Students will complete a short paragraph. In the paragraph students will address a career that interest them and what career/educational goals are necessary to reach their specific career. Use of Formative Assessment After reviewing the students post assessment I will use the data to determine if the students have taken an interest in a specific area. When we are able to we will focus on the careers that the students are interested in. I will also look at what career/educational goals the student set and will help them obtain them. I will use the goals as a way to motivate students.

After participating in class discussion, students will be able to identify a career area that interests them and set goals to achieve the career. The students will be able to identify a career and set two goals.

Accommodations:
Students who are slower paced learners will be given directions and guiding questions before the lesson is taught to allow them time to think about the subject, and answers to questions that may be asked. Students who finish early will be allowed to start their independent reading time. Directions will be verbally explained and posted on the board. Students will engage in classroom discussion, writing, and visual observations to accommodate all types of learners. Students who struggle with writing will either be given a shorter assignment or an extended period of time, depending on each students specific situation.

Materials: Video will be used to introduce career clusters. Two worksheets will be used to guide students during
discussion times.

Procedures:
1. Students will begin the class by answering a bell ringer -Is there a career you find interesting to you? -If you have a career you are interested in how does you personality fit the career? -What training or education do you need to get a job in that area? 2. Students will be shown a short two-minute video that gives an overview of the 16 career clusters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ai_EPEPi28 3. As a class we will list all the career clusters on the board and we will choose one as a class to look at in depth and list possible career options under that cluster. Then we will look at what personality traits would be an asset in that area. - What makes a good _(career)_? -What traits are necessary? - People skill? -Technical skills? -What education is needed? 7. Students will then take their sheet and use it to independently write a short paragraph describing why they choose that specific career. They will write about what steps they need to take to make their career a reality and if there are any ways they can explore their career further before they leave middle or high school.

Activity Analysis:
Identify at least two activities you plan to use in this lesson and explain why you are planning these specific activities. In your explanation include the following prompts: How each activity (instructional strategy) supports the lesson objective(s). How the activities stem from student characteristics, needs, and/or contextual factors identified in TWS 1. What technology you will use to implement the activities, how the technology will be used, and who will use the technology. If you do not plan to use any form of technology, provide a clear rationale for its omission. The first activity the students learn about the different career clusters as a whole group and as partners and the second activity students explore the clusters in depth. Having the students explore in depth helps students to gain an understanding of the clusters in order to make a decision on what kind of career could be interested in. This supports the lesson objectives because the students have to an understanding of what the careers are before they can decide which career fits them. This is helpful for the students in the classroom because they will watch a movie, see a PowerPoint, and work in pairs this gives the students multiple ways to learn the material. Technology will be present by the teacher. The first form of technology is the video and then the PowerPoint. Students will then use the Smart Board to fill out the graphic organizer. Good.
