1) Identify the topic- it is going to be more complex and abstract than teaching a concept. 2) Specify learning objectivesthese objectives include the content, but also learning problem-solving skills and self-direction. 3) Identify problems- it helps if the problems chosen are clear, concrete, and personalized. Also it is important to know whether the students have enough prior knowledge to effectively design a strategy for solving the problem. 4) Access materials- students need to know what they are trying to accomplish and have access to the materials to solve the problem.

1) Review and Present ProblemTeacher reviews the knowledge needed to solve the problem and presents the students with a specific, clear, and concrete problem to solve. 2) Devise a strategy- The students devise a strategy and the teacher provides them with feedback about the strategy. 3) Implement the strategy- Students implement their strategies as the teacher carefully monitors their efforts and provide feedback. This is where the teacher scaffolds the students if they are struggling, typically with the use of guiding questions. 4) Discuss and evaluate results- The teacher guides a discussion of the students efforts and the results they find.

* Alternate assessments are valuable when assessing problembased learning. - Such as: performance assessments, systematic observations, checklists, and rating scales. - These provide teacher and student with informative feedback about learning progress. * Teachers could also create an assignment that involves using the strategy learned to solve more problems. The teacher could also give students more problems to solve that require them to develop new strategies. This tests their problem-solving and self-regulation skills.

* This model capitalizes on the motivating effects of curiosity and challenge, since students are given problems to solve on their own. * Authentic tasks are also motivating because students are able to link abstract content to the real world. * Other motivating factors are autonomy and involvement.

Is a model that not only allows for acquiring new content knowledge and review of previous knowledge, but also encourages students to develop problem-solving skills and self-regulation. It also provides motivation for students to learn through curiosity and challenge.
