Interpretive Mode- Listening


I can identify words, phrases, and expressions related to familiar topics in video clips and songs or in other recorded materials replaying as needed. I can understand and explain short and simple conversations on familiar topics or when I have previously seen or heard the content, provided that the speaker speaks slowly and clearly. I can sometimes recognize common roots between languages, prefixes, suffixes, and vocabulary that help me understand conversations that I have not prepared. I can understand questions and answers about basic needs and amenities. I can translate information not normally understood when the speaker rephrases, repeats, or reframes the information. I can classify and compare words in different disciplines. I can identify short, simple conversations and/or narratives within highly predictable and familiar topics as well as in live or recorded matierals, replaying or repeating as needed. I can recognize decontextualized speech such as would be found in a phone, Skype, or other informal conversation. I can identify the essential information of an extended conversation around me on short familiar topics provided that the language is spoken slowly and clearly in other words, I can get the GIST of what is being said. I can consistently recognize cognates, prefixes, suffixes, and thematic vocabulary to help me understand spoken live or recorded language found in music, on the TV, on DVDs and on the Internet. I can recognize the symbols of an alphabetic and/or syllabic writing system and/or a limited number of characters in a system that uses characters. I can locate familiar words, phrases and simple sentences in authentic written materials, e.g. ads, directions, newspaper headlines rereading as required. I can explain short simple written directions and instructions although I prefer to have my homework assignments translated just in case. I can recognize basic questions on standardized forms well enough to give the most important information about myself. I can read a short description of a person and reconstruct in my mind what he or she is like. I can decipher online classified ads, e.g. job qualifications, car sales, and apartment rentals online using the vocabulary I know. I can appraise information and order clothes (or furnishings) from an online catalogue and would not have to return the clothes because they didnt fit or a sofa was delivered when I had ordered a chair. I can read and recognize a number of food or personal items on a shopping list and locate on a map most of the stores where these items can be found. I can understand a personal letter, email, or text message in which the writer tells or asks me about aspects of everyday life on familiar topics. I can decipher and execute short, simple written directions and routine instructions, for example, I typically no longer need to have my homework assignments and test questions translated. I can understand short narratives about everyday things dealing with topics that are familiar to me if the text is written in simple language. I can identify basic questions on standardized forms well enough to give the most important information, e.g. make vacation/travel plans. I can explain online classified ads, e.g. job qualifications, car sales, and apartment rentals online using the vocabulary I know. I can introduce myself, greet others, and take leave in a culturally appropriate way. Using memorized expressions, I can ask and answer simple questions on very familiar topics. E.g., home, family, activities, and professions. I can exchange personal and professional information such as address, telephone number, age, nationality, family, likes, and dislikes. I can ask and answer in simple terms questions about likes and dislikes. I can make myself understood in simple terms and understand the other person if s/he is accustomed to non-native speakers and helps me along. I can make simple purchases in a familiar context.
