SS Unit Lesson Plan 2

Essential Questions Standards of Learning (be sure to include integrated standards here too)
What can we learn about people and events from long ago? NCSS: Time, Continuity, & Change History K.1 The student will recognize that history describes events and people of other times and places by a) identifying examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln Mathematics K.7 The student will recognize a penny and quarter. English K.1 The student will demonstrate growth in the use of oral language. b) Participate in a variety of oral language activities including choral and echo speaking and recitation of short poems, rhymes, songs, and stories with repeated word order patterns.

Objectives Materials

Students will be able to recognize a quarter. Teacher materials: Quarter song (Adopted from Dr. Jean) Student materials: Quarters Worksheet: Identifying Quarters (Adopted from Teacher Created Resources, Inc.) Pencil Color pencils/Crayons Introduction- whole group (10 minutes) Students are asked to join the teacher on the carpet Teacher introduces the Quarter song Students sing the Quarter song Instructional strategies- whole group (10 minutes) Teacher hands out a couple of quarters for students to examine Invites students to discuss the things they observe about the quarter o Size/Color/Picture Teacher connects George Washington to the quarter

Procedures (introduction, instructional strategies, summary/close)

o George Washington is so important to the United States that we put his face on the quarter. The quarter is worth 25 cents. Summary- whole group/individual work (10 minutes) Students individually complete activity worksheet o Based on what you learned about the quarter, you are going to color the quarters with a blue crayon. Put an X on each coin that is not a quarter. Remember to also think about the picture on the back of a quarter.

Formative Assessment

Informal verbal assessment and observation during class discussion (formative)- Ask questions to check for comprehension during group discussion, use feedback loop where necessary

Activity worksheet (formative)- Students must identify quarters with George Washingtons face on it o Assess whether students meet/did not meet learning objective

Differentiation

Learning tendencies: Auditory- listening, discussing, song Visual- quarter, pictures

Skill readiness: Necessary vocabulary is explained by the teacher for students who do not have sufficient content specific vocabulary knowledge Challenge Level: Students with more advanced skill readiness may write the value of each coin
