On Friday, October 25, 2013, Iryna Myronenko (1st Semester) and Charles Balogh (3rd Semester) attended the 9th Annual Bonafide Orthopedic Nursing Education Symposium (BONES) at the Sheraton Mission Valley Hotel. The event drew over 100 healthcare participants from all the major San Diego hospitals, in addition to

other healthcare professionals from as far away as Colorado. Sponsored by UCSD, this event is geared toward educating nurses in the most up-to-date information and technology affecting orthopedic nursing. Presentations included topics in compartment syndrome, replantation, prosthetics, and patient safety. Keynote speaker was Dominique Gambale, who was involved in a terrible accident outside the Stingaree nightclub

in downtown San Diego, February 2011. Dominique credits UCSD and its team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and assistants with providing her the best patient care leading to her recovery from a severe leg injury involving near-amputation. Kids Care Fest 2013

To the Grossmont College Department of Nursing, Once again I want to commend your staff and students for helping us out with this, our12th Annual Kids Care Fest. We love working with your students because they always show up in their uniforms and they always show up with smiles and enthusiasm to help. The first year the Grossmont College Nursing Students came to volunteer at our Kids Care Fest had such an enormous impact on our event. It changed everything! Now with each year that rolls around, we can't even imagine having the Kids Care Fest without the help of your nursing students. They have become that important to us! Again this year, each student dressed and acted professionally while having fun with the kids. Each and every student jumped in with eagerness to do whatever task assigned to them, and they looked for jobs to do without waiting to be told. Please know that then entire Kids Care Fest Committee sends our appreciation to the students who volunteered the day of our Kids Care Fest. You can be very proud of how well they represented the Grossmont College Department of Nursing! Sincerely, Alison M. CNSA Family Day

CNSA held their first ever Family Day on August 17th before the semester began. The purpose of family day was to invite new students, current students and their families to visit the School of Nursing at Grossmont College. For many, this was the first time they had been on campus and had ever walked into a nursing classroom. It was a great experience for all who attended! The day began with a warm welcome from Dean Yaddow and introductions of first and second year faculty. Assistant Director Maloy also gave families and new students an overview of our two year program. Students and their families were invited to tour our nursing labs where CNSA officers had prepared an interactive activity. The day ended with a wonderful potluck lunch. A special thanks to our CNSA Breaththrough to Nursing officer, Katie Schnautz, who organized and planned the event. There were over 75 people in attendance and we hope there will be many more next year!

2013 CNSA CONVENTION

Change Yourself, Nursing, the World! This was the theme of the 2013 CNSA convention, organized by our very own 4th semester student, Katrina Stell, who won the office of CNSA Convention Director at the 2012 convention. This year, 9 students attended along with Prof. Ngo, and were inspired by the speakers whose topics included Nurse Leadership, Ethics, and Nursing Beyond Our U.S. Borders. Nurse recruiters were available to

review resumes and a variety of vendors offered opportunities for employment and continuing education. Our Grossmont College chapter was allotted four student delegates who attended all of the delegate meetings, voted on bylaws changes and resolutions, and elected the new CNSA officers for the upcoming year. Katrina Stell and Maire Orlando submitted Grossmont Colleges first resolution, regarding improving care for

childhood sexual abuse survivors, which was passed by majority vote. Overall the convention provided a nice mix of fun, business, fellowship with other student nurses, and good work. Most of all, the students came back fired up and excited with the idea of all that we, as student nurses, can do. Changes are already underway lets see what this next year holds! The Thanksgiving Gift Baskets contained all of the fixings to create a beautiful Thanksgiving family meal as well as gift cards to help purchase other items to help make the meal complete. CNSA would like to thank all of the students, faculty and staff that made this event a success! These donations made Thanksgiving possible for 9 very thankful families.

On November 18th, CNSA and EOPS/Cal works presented 9 Thanksgiving Gift Baskets to Grossmont College students and their families. CNSA coordinated the efforts of students and faculty of the

CNSACultural Event
The cultural event titled Cultural Influences on Healthcare sponsored by Grossmont College Nursing Program, CNSA, and WACC took place on November 7th, 2013. The event was a huge success thanks to the support of Dean Yaddow, the nursing faculty and students. Professor Brooks secured awesome speakers from the Deaf community as well as from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. Information learned from this event helps faculty and student nurses identify vulnerable populations with increased health and healthcare disparities, respect for diversity and individual differences, provide care safely and effectively based on patients unique cultural backgrounds. The event was concluded with an amazing 5-course meal provided by the Culinary Arts Department at just $25 per person. The Nursing Department is looking forward to the next cultural event in Spring, 2014.
It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength. Maya Angelou
